Introduction by whitefox CEO John Bond
Crowdfunding | noun
The practice of funding a project or venture by raising money from a large number of people who each contribute a relatively small amount, typically via the internet.

So much for the definition, what about the reality?

In what has become an increasing economically challenging environment, the idea of covering the cost of your book project before you commit to its creation can seem appealing. But how best to plan a successful campaign, leverage your community and successfully hit your target raise? At whitefox, we’ve been on a mission to listen, collate and curate the collective wisdom and experience of the people who have learned the hard way the answers to these and many more questions. And now it is time to share...

If you’d like to find out more about the crowdfunding specifics for publishing projects, we have produced a comprehensive guide that you can download here – don’t worry, you won’t receive double emails from us if you've already subscribed.
The pros and cons of crowdfunding: is it the right route for you?

PROS

Easy to set up: crowdfunding platforms are made to be straightforward solutions for those looking to harness technology in order to launch their campaign and get as many people interested as possible. Users don’t have to worry about setting up payment processing, SSL, an online store, etc., as this has all been provided on a simple platform that even the technologically challenged will be able to use effectively.

CONS

An existing audience: marketing can be really difficult, especially if you lack an existing audience. It will be far easier to build support for your idea and acquire donations from people already familiar with you and your work than someone who is starting from scratch and trying to build a following from nothing. This isn’t to say it can’t be done, but it’s worth considering that it might take a significant amount of time to market your campaign and get the backing you need.

Expert opinion of the month: Cindy-Marie Harvey
Cindy-Marie Harvey is a wine expert and owner of Love Wine Food Ltd, a private wine tour company. Her upcoming book Watercress, Willow and Wine presents a sumptuous collection of recipes with which to pair wines from England’s finest producers, showcasing wonderful local produce, too.

Q. What advice would you offer to other aspiring authors looking to crowdfund and self-publish a book?

Like most things to do with creating a book, it all takes longer than you originally think! Be brutally honest with yourself about what you want to achieve with the final book – is it all about the volume of sales (always good but not the sole point!), about fulfilling a long-held desire to become a published author, or is it about sharing knowledge and getting your readers involved in and excited about the subject?

Choose your partner for self-publishing carefully. Be aware of your own strengths and weaknesses, and make sure whoever you choose will offer vital support, allowing your voice to shine through. They also need to be honest with you throughout every aspect of the process (even when your creative brain may go overboard!).
