Refugee Week
Nottingham Refugee Week is an annual cultural festival that unites communities and organisations across our city. It celebrates the culture of sanctuary we have built here in Nottingham, and is an act of welcome, a gesture of solidarity and a shared celebration with people who have sought refuge here. It exists both to raise awareness of the reasons why people are forced to seek refuge – persecution, war, poverty and conflict – and also to celebrate the contributions made by refugees and asylum-seekers to the economic, cultural and social life of the city.

Mojatu will be manning a stall and a music and arts workshop to show our support for the refugees and alyssum seekers. Any one can join and take part in the festivities. If you are interested and what to know how to get involved please email us using the link bel

Mental Health

Carrying on from  the month of May the mental health theme was loneliness and how loneliness effects different communities. These communities being the BAME, elderly and disabled communities. here at Mojatu we made a collection of videos, getting the point of view from these different communities, explaining what loneliness means to them and how different factors can have an impact on that area of their mental health. Mojatu will be producing a podcast as another form off sharing experiences and spreading awareness.

So here at Mojatu we have made a FGM Myth Busters booklet and FGM guide, in order to shed light on the facts and disproving the fiction regarding the topic. Article: Domestic Abuse During the Pandemic (Saida Barbar)

Domestic abuse involves emotional, physical, psychological or sexual abuse in an intimate relationship or between family members. It is behaviour that is used to control and assert the power dynamic in a relationship. Anyone can be a victim of domestic abuse, and anyone who is forced to alter their behaviour because they fear their partner is being abused.

Being trapped under lockdown rules with an abuser, as well as having reduced contact with any external support systems meant that victims and families experiencing domestic abuse were more at risk than before. Risk factors for abusers to perpetrate abuse such as increased financial pressure and mental health problems only escalates this problem. One fifth of women who reported experiencing domestic violence said that they had tried to leave the situation but were unable to access housing due to increased demand caused by the pandemic.

Article: FGM in White Communities

Female Genital Mutilation is not an issue isolated to African and Middle Eastern communities. It has occurred in White Christian communities for centuries, dating back to the 19th century as a cure for masturbation. Despite not being mentioned in any religious text, FGM tends to be associated with Black, Middle Eastern and Muslim communities. However, in recent years a number of white Christians in America have begun to come forward and tell their stories and experiences of undergoing FGM. They hope that this will help to raise awareness of how widespread the issue is and encourage others to not be afraid to tell their stories too.
