Winslow Homer at the Met Museum
Renowned for his powerful paintings of American life and scenery, Winslow Homer (1836–1910) remains a consequential figure whose art continues to appeal to broad audiences. This exhibition reconsiders Homer’s work through the lens of conflict, a theme that crosses his prolific career. A persistent fascination with struggle permeates his art—from emblematic images of the Civil War and Reconstruction that examine the effects of the conflict on the landscape, soldiers, and formerly enslaved people to dramatic scenes of rescue and hunting as well as monumental seascapes and dazzling tropical works painted throughout the Atlantic world.

My enjoyment for seascape paintings goes way back to the days my parents would take us to the Jersey shore many days ago! I vividly recall the various paintings that hung in the walls in seaside cottages from Seaside Heights to Lavalette. Mostly nautical paintings of clipper ships or beach scenes with sand dunes silhouetted against an orange sunset, I was always in awe of the talent necessary to create these. For the past twenty five years I've joined the generation of painters mesmerized by the sea. My love for painting the ocean has taken me up and down the Jersey coast where I attempt to capture the beauty and majesty of the ocean and coastline on canvas. This Summer I've put together a customized curriculum where you can learn the many different techniques to create your own Seascape painting. Join us at our Thursday, Friday, or Saturday to explore this incredible subject matter while progressing as a painter. Click here to see schedule

What is a realistic expectation for the ‘service life’ of a painting? How long can one expect a painting to last when using best practices and reasonably archival materials?
We don’t have any definite answers, but we’ll try to put things into perspective for you. The oldest surviving body of work from the Western painting tradition, which is structurally akin to paintings as we know them today, with panel support, ground and paint layers, and varnish, are altarpieces from the late 13th century. Whether contemporary paintings will also last 700 years and longer is hard to say. The life cycle of a painting depends on many factors, including natural aging, storage conditions, accidental damage, being repaired or painted over, and being sold and resold. Let’s look at these factors and some typical stations in the life of a painting.
