Updates From the Vestry

This past week our Vestry (or governing board) decided the following:
  • For the last three months Adam Loveridge has been filling our temporary Parish Administrator role. As of July 1, he is going to become a permanent parish employee. Please join in welcoming Adam.

  • The monthly St. Barnabas Thrift Shop outreach donations in 2022 will be increased from $1000 to $2000 with retroactive true-ups for those early in the year. Strong sales increases have allowed this increase.

  • Our Rector, Rob Keim, will be away for the first three Sundays in July, and The Rev. Karen Siegfriedt will be with us again.  Rob will be on the East Coast in Baltimore as a Deputy to General Convention, and also taking some vacation time off.

Interested in Serving During the Sunday Holy Communion Service?

There will be training for lectors, ushers, and Eucharistic ministers scheduled during the last week of June. If you are interested in one or all of these ministries please let Dcn. Susan know or email the office.

Dinner Night Out – Thursday, June 30th at 6:00 pm

We are returning to a per-Covid summer tradition. Please join us on the outdoor patio at the Branch Street Deli to hear from a speaker of the Jewish tradition. Our own spiritual journeys are enhanced when we learn about the spiritual traditions of others. We see that we are connected by God’s abiding love. You will order your own food and beverages inside from the extensive menu, and we will eat and listen outside. Outside food and beverage are not permitted, and reservations are not needed.

Episcopal Church Women’s Annual
Mary Lou Thompson Retreat

August 19-21, 2022

St Francis Retreat Center
549 Mission Vineyard Rd.
San Juan Bautista, CA.

The title of the presentation of this year’s retreat is: “Reconciliation and Creating Community” How have these past few Covid years yielded moments of reconciliation? What or whom are we reconciled with? How have recent current events stirred you to consider the necessity of reconciliation? What would it take to change our attitudes regarding our fellow humans in these days of war in Eastern Europe and children all over the world being randomly assaulted? How can we come into community with a sense of belonging and trust? Can we create such a community in our churches, homes, communities?

Join the Episcopal church women and Rev. Mary Lou McKinney, our retreat leader this year, for a time of reflection, conversation, and prayer to address some of these topics so pertinent to our lives right now. This year’s retreat is extended to three days for added rest and rejuvenation. You can arrive on August 19 any time after 2:00 PM. The retreat program begins at 4:00 PM with refreshments and social time. It ends on August 21 at 1:00 PM.

Online Zoom Book Launch

“Get Free and Stay Free, by David M. Lewis
Thursday July 7th at 5pm

Our St. Barnabas community has supported the transformation and redemption process of those who have experienced the hard lessons of the prison journey. You are invited to attend a virtual event where former prisoners share their redemption stories. This Zoom meeting will introduce you to formerly incarcerated Christians who have had their lives transformed by Jesus Christ's redemptive hand, when a seemingly hopeless life has been changed into a life of purpose. The presentation will be a Q and A of returned citizens. Register for the Virtual Book Launch: pp.events/avL9Q4EA or email Phil West  phillipywest@gmail.com to be sent a registration link

You can preorder the book now on amazon here: amzn.to/3xOezwC All of the proceeds go toward encouraging current prisoners to follow the steps taken by the Returned Citizens and copies of Get Free and Stay Free will be sent to individual prisoners. Viewing the Zoom Meeting and purchasing a copy of Get Free and Stay Free are very practical ways of meeting Matt 25:36.  (I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you visited me.)

One-Woman-Show with Brynn Albanese

Sunday, July 3rd at 3pm

Brynn is a well-known and loved multi genre violinist on the California Central Coast. She has been seen front and center as Soloist and Concertmaster on numerous Performing Arts Center stages with a wide variety of groups in the area as well as the ever-popular World Music Band, Café Musique. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of Cambria’s largest Concert Series, Cambria Concerts Unplugged. Brynn is now a Therapeutic Music Practitioner and End of Life Doula in Hospitals and Skilled Nursing Facilities. During the Pandemic, Brynn created a One-Woman-Show using backing tracks and recordings of her own band in the living room of her Cambria home. Seeing that people were starving for LIVE music, in person, she took to the streets, cul-de-sacs, medians, yards, balconies and driveways and has performed over 140 Concerts since April 2020. A mix of European Gypsy, Latin jazz, Classical with a twist, Opera covers and a big splash of Celtic… she has created a lively, engaging and interactive show that she has now taken on the road!

Update from SLO Canterbury

SLO Canterbury Foundation (SLO CF) is the 501c3 non-profit that organizes campus ministry at Cal Poly. We have elected new officers for the new "academic" year starting July 1, 2022. Rachel Mann will serve as President (outgoing was Liz Frost) and Cal Poly student Caroline Roberts as Secretary (outgoing was Paul Shires). Leann Brooks continues to do our book-keeping.

Together with St. Benedict's of Los Osos, we applied for and received a Bishop's Appeal Community Trailblazer grant to hire recent seminary graduate Jen Crompton (they/them) to serve as Chaplain. The Trailblazer grant covers 50% of a full time position for 2 years, including benefits. St Benedict's will cover 25%, and SLO CF will cover another 25%. Jen's time will be split 50% to St Ben's, and 50% to campus ministry.

There is consensus among the board that campus ministry is a mission that needs a full-time person with consistent funding from the Diocese and larger church. The dominant evangelical Christian culture at Cal Poly is alienating and oppressive to folks with historically "othered" identities and those who care about them. We see a deep need to create safe and welcoming spaces and activities where they can grow in understanding their own minds and spirits as friends.

Volunteers operate the St. Barnabas Thrift Shop

“People willing to roll up their sleeves seldom lose their shirts.”

Book sales have moved from the patio to the parish hall. Thank you to those who have purchased books. Summer is an especially active season for donations. To avoid disappointment, if you have more than a couple of grocery bags of things please call first to make sure we have room to accept them. The phone number is 805-270-4023.

Help wanted: someone to transport books from the shop to the parish hall and arrange/display. Remove books from the parish hall and transport hardbacks to the Grover Beach library and paperbacks to Nan’s Preowned Books. This should require a few hours two or three times a month.

Due to a small bathroom sink, some glass or ceramic items need to be rinsed so the shop is seeking someone willing to pick up items, rinse and return to the shop. One trip a week would help the process.

Please call Mary Ann Hjalmarson (805)709-4284 if any of these jobs interest you.

Processors and cashiers are always needed.
Everyone appreciates the generosity of the congregation.

Our hearts are with all those living through the crisis in Ukraine. Episcopal Relief & Development is mobilizing with our partners to provide humanitarian assistance to families fleeing the violence — and we will continue to coordinate with these networks to meet the needs of families that have been displaced. Please support these efforts, and please pray for all those who are affected.

Go to www.episcopalrelief.org  to donate quickly to refugees fleeing Ukraine.  On the homepage there is a button that allows you an easy way to give money; our prayers are in pushing “donate.”

We are grateful for your support of the many for whom prayers are answered with a cup of soup, a warm coat, and a sleeping bag.

Flower and Candle Dedications

Candles are lighted by St. Barnabas to the Glory of God.

The flowers have been placed on the altar by Bill Cockshott in memory of his wife, Vi Cockshott and in celebration of his son Randall’s birthday; by Art and Jane Delgadillo in celebration of their anniversary.

Please sign up for an open slot to host a coffee hour in the following weeks - there is a clipboard on the ushers table in the Narthex. There are openings after the 10 am service available. Contact the church office if you have questions to be answered by the Kitchen and Hospitality team.

Bearded Guy Seen on Church Campus

Hello all, I'd like to introduce myself.

My name is Adam Loveridge, and I'm the new Parish Administrator. He's a photo of my family from this Father's Day. (My sisters: Emily and Megan, son Wylder, dad Bill, daughter Hazel, mom Sue, and then me.)

I went to Cal Poly and graduated with an architecture degree in 2005. I worked with a college ministry in various capacities for about 14 years and finished a Diploma in the Art of Spiritual Direction in 2018. I now live in Los Osos and also do a lot of work in video production.

I've known Rev. Rob for about six years through our work together with The Peace Academy of the Sciences and Arts. I was excited when he let me know of this position opening up. While I grew up in a more conservative tradition, at each major transition in my life I have found safety and welcom in the more progressive expressions of the faith.

Feel free to stop by when the office is open or look up in the balcony and wave on the Sunday's I'm helping with the livestream. I look forward to serving along with you all.
