We return to ordinary time in the liturgical calendar this weekend. Considering the challenges these three readings present to us as followers of Christ, it’s anything but ordinary. They present us with the reality regarding making decisions. God calls us to be decisive. But we want to be decisive and have the freedom to make our own decisions; sometimes, decisions bring consequences.

In the first reading, moving into an unknown future challenges the need for security. In the second reading, false freedom, the freedom of license and anything goes, challenges the true freedom of loving for the sake of others, particularly the other that is God. Finally, in the Gospel, we're challenged to move beyond the ties of family loyalty and affection into commitments beyond the pale of one’s immediate family, which means moving into the decisions and responses that go with belonging to God.

These challenging readings are an excellent reminder of what is sometimes required of us to be followers of Christ if we are going to claim ourselves to be. As we watch the very interesting and possibly explosive events in government, we will do well to remember who we belong to and who claims us. The journey to the cross, which we just finished this Lent, reminds us of what sometimes comes with being a follower of Christ. If we suffer for our faith or beliefs, we do so because we are decisive in our trust in God as followers of Christ, inspired to action by the Holy Spirit.

Choosing Between Two Right Things
Everyone is called to enter the kingdom. First announced to the children of Israel, this messianic kingdom is intended to accept men of all nations. To enter it, one must accept Jesus’ word. (CCC 543)

As we grow, we tell ourselves and try to teach our children and grandchildren not to choose wrong or evil things so that our paths in life avoid hard lessons. Yet one of the greatest temptations in life is the choice between two good things.

Luke’s Gospel for this Sunday shows four incidents and encounters with people who might follow Jesus but are held back because of concerns and motives. On this 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, all three readings speak to us concerning the vocation, the call we all have of giving our entire self to God, who created us and calls us to him.

The Samaritan villagers have heard about Jesus, yet they are held back by patriotism in their ancient rivalry with Israel. Patriotism and devotion to the national cause is, of course, a good thing. But when national interest becomes the only lens through which you see all reality, including spiritual and eternal, you are in danger of losing perspective. The confident man values financial independence and security, a good thing, but Jesus points out that possessions can stand in the way of following and serving God with all one’s heart.

A man wants to bury his father before following Jesus, a good thing fulfilling the Fourth Commandment. Jesus points out that religious observances should not immobilize us from following him, who constantly seeks new territories and challenges in the call to the kingdom. The family man wants to say goodbye to his loved ones before answering the call. Having high social and family value awareness is a good thing. Jesus points out that the call is urgent. The Kingdom of God is here and now in Jesus! All else, even family, takes a back seat.

So many things distract us from our road to Jerusalem, our call to the Kingdom. Many are good things. Jesus does not demand we follow. He invites us. He offers us a path of life, making it clear that whatever we encounter on that path, he will be with us. We will learn how to love and how to serve, and we will discover our true selves. We will set others free to learn with us eternal life in the Kingdom of God, a very good thing.

Teens Go to Work, Pray, Serve
Last Sunday, we sent forth 19 teens and 7 parent chaperones going to the Catholic Heart Workcamp in Knoxville. From June 26 to July 2, they will work hard, make friends, serve others, laugh, pray, and spread joy, all while transforming lives in Christ’s name.

They will be working with other Catholic teens from across the nation through various service projects: home repair, painting, yard work, and more. This is an excellent spiritual and social opportunity to help bring our youth closer to the heart of Jesus and serve as Mother Teresa has shown us. We thank you for all your support and prayers.

Summer with the Saints
Preschool and elementary school-age students are invited to learn about a few of our favorite Holy Heroes. This summer, we will be learning, crafting, and having fun with the Saints. The program will run for four Sundays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Green Hope HS cafeteria. Parents won't have to participate in the class but must stay in the cafeteria during the class.  There is no fee to join this summer program.

July 17: Saint Teresa of Calcutta (Fruit of the Spirit: Peace and Kindness)
July 24: Blessed Carlo Acutis (Fruit of the Spirit: Love and Forbearance)

Did you know?
Amid attacks on Catholic churches and other security concerns surrounding a looming Supreme Court abortion case, the U.S. bishops are inviting Catholics to turn to prayer. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops will observe Religious Freedom Week from June 22 to 29 by encouraging Catholics to pray, reflect, and act to promote religious freedom.

This year, the bishops are focusing on promoting a culture of life, with the theme Life and Dignity for All. The USCCB website dedicates each day of Religious Freedom Week to a specific cause. These include: Walking with Moms in Need (a project run by the USCCB to help pregnant and parenting women in difficult situations); adoption and foster care; taxpayer funding for abortion; religious freedom in China; pregnancy resource centers; health care workers, and free speech. Worship Center Financial Update
We are just a few months away from the dedication of our Worship Center on 1125 Mother Teresa Drive. A dream and journey that began 21 years ago is finally becoming reality. In a way, though, this is just the beginning of another journey as Mother Teresa Catholic Church serves the spiritual needs for thousands of people in the coming years. We should be proud of the foundation that has been laid!

Financially, our Worship Center project is moving along very well. As expected, we are at the stage in the building process, where we have used all of the funds generated by our capital campaign and will begin the process of borrowing funds from the diocese.

Once the Worship Center is complete, our final loan amount will be determined and monthly payments to the diocese will begin.

There are three ways you can contribute that will help reduce the amount we will need to borrow from the diocese:

1. Generational Legacy Program
Donating funds for the purchase of specific items for the sanctuary and church grounds, such as chairs and kneelers.

2. Memorial Garden
Purchasing a niche in our beautiful Memorial Garden at pre-construction pricing. The price structure will change in the next few months.

3. Debt Reduction Gift
Making a contribution that will be directly applied towards reducing the amount of the diocese loan.

Many of you have already given your time, energy, treasury, sweat, and tears to make what is about to happen on our land possible. We cannot thank you enough. We look forward to collectively celebrating all of this hard work in our new building in a few short months!
