For the next three weeks we're featuring the work of Lucy Cooper, a Brighton-baed printmaker who creates limited edition screen prints characterised by strong, bright colour palettes evoking memories of much-loved places or moments of reflection. The title of her exhibition is 'Travelling Light". As she explains:
"The screenprints on display are all inspired by places I have travelled to or journeys I have taken. During my travels, I am always drawn to the light and colours I see around me. Andalusia, Morocco, Sardinia, Tobago and Puglia are all represented in some way within the prints in the gallery window, as well as places closer to home including the Oxfordshire countryside and Kew Gardens.
The starting point of my prints is usually a photograph I have taken, or a series of reference photographs, which I then develop in a semi-abstract style. Sometimes elements of the original photograph are retained in the final composition; other times they are transformed into something quite different as I work on them. This is also shaped by the print process, which can itself take the composition in exciting but unpredictable directions. Combining real-life sights with abstract elements and calligraphic influences, I enjoy exploring interesting yet sometimes unexpected combinations of colour and shape while still conveying the original sense of place.
I hope that the works bring some of the same sense of joy and energy to the viewer as they do to me as I create them."
Lucy will be in the gallery on Saturday 9th July and would be delighted to meet any visitors and to talk about her work and her process. Visitors will also be treated to new work from all the Chalk artists which is now hanging in the gallery - as always, there's a wide range of styles and media to enjoy, and a warm welcome from the artist on duty. The gallery is open Thursdays - Sundays from 11-4, while our online shop can of course be visited at any time.
