Kids in the Garden

You know the school year is coming to a close when you collect buttercups (for ink making), practice handstands in the field and eat directly from the garden.  Thanks to Ed Fu-Chen Juan our resident artist who inspired me to have children explore natural pigments from nature. THANKS, ED!

The Kids in the Garden Program isn’t just about growing food.  It is connecting the learners to the natural environment around them and building awareness of living more mindfully.  Thanks to all the teachers, support staff and administrators for allowing us to share your classroom spaces.  Have a great summer!

Menu for the day!
Veggie “burritos” with new potato salad, corn and cucumbers
Colour swatches from various natural plant materials

#HelpRichmondGrow

How do you help Richmond Grow? This summer, Urban Bounty is partnering up with UBC INSTRCC to share 3 stories of community connection, solidarity, and food! You may remember our call for participants for this project in last month’s newsletter, and we couldn’t be more excited to share their wonderful stories with you. Stay tuned in the coming weeks and follow our social media for a season of learning and exploration as we celebrate local community gardens and the folks who make these green spaces so great!

Can’t wait and want to get involved in Richmond Growing? Share your stories with the community by posting your garden pictures, videos, and sounds at #HelpRichmondGrow.

Artist in Residence

Resident artist Ed Fu-Chen Juan has been very busy running workshops with us. His passion, knowledge and dedication to his craft are infections…so infectious that I have been fixated on making natural inks from gathered plant material.

Ed's 2-day papermaking workshop was full and we worked outside (in some rain) and participants made their own paper and used some of the recently made inks to paint.  Please follow along on our journey and check out Ed’s blog.

Don't fret if you missed the first papermaking workshop because we will be running it again on July 9th and 10th. Sign up here.  If you have any questions please let me know, director@urbanbounty.ca

Community Gardens

We would like to thank all gardeners for their support and collaboration during the community garden spring reviews.  In spite of the challenging weather this spring, all community gardens are looking great. Your time and patience is greatly appreciated.

Newsletter Discount

Dajue Art Garden located at 8451 No. 5 Road, Richmond, is happy to extend some discounts on gardening supplies to our members and newsletter recipients until the end of July.  Please let them know you heard about this perk through Urban Bounty.  They are currently offering discounts on the following items:
  • Plastic Stakes 包塑杆类 20% Off
  • Vegetables 菜苗 15% Off
  • Herbs 香料 15% Off

Rule Highlight!

Rabbit and rodent alert! Pests are opportunistic and always looking for habitats to avoid predators. When habitats have been disturbed and exposed, pests will look for new places to live in.  To prevent this from happening, please make sure to keep the inner and outer area of your plots free of clutter. Make sure that all gardening items are minimized, neatly stored, and that you check/move things around periodically. This will greatly reduce available nesting locations and guarantee that “uninvited guests” are not living rent-free in your plot.

We also ask gardeners who keep birdhouses to make sure these structures are cleaned and inspected periodically. We recently received confirmation that rats are climbing into some of these structures. Reduce pests by reducing clutter in your plot and inspecting nesting structures.
