The UH Office of Sustainability (UHOS) is currently accepting applications for next year's 2022-23 Americorps VISTA Sustainability & Resilience Fellows Program. This program is an opportunity to gain professional experience in working to create conditions that are conducive to transformation at a legacy institution. Participants will work directly with UH faculty, staff, admin and students to strengthen capacity at our campuses to support sustainability & resilience initiatives in the communities we serve. 

Time Commitment:

Land Stewardship Position Available Now with Kualoa Ranch
Full-Time

Implements field work designed and planned by the Stewardship Manager. Participates in stewardship efforts at Kualoa Ranch in Hakipuʻu, Kualoa, and Kaʻaʻawa ahupuaʻa. Performs active restoration projects and native forest management work including: native seed collection,

greenhouse work, outplanting weed control, monitoring, and rare plant management. Assists with rare and endangered species management. Assists with the management of pastureland for grazing efficiency including invasive species control and fence repair. Participates in the control and or eradication of targeted alien species from forested and lowland areas using chemical
(herbicide and insecticide) and or mechanical methods. Conducts native and non-native species inventories across Ranch lands. Maintains spring-fed loʻi kalo site involving harvesting, planting and weeding. Collects and analyzes technical field data, and utilizes global positioning units.

Maintains and repairs field gear. Occasionally leads volunteer activities such as weed control, outplanting and other field work.

Are You a Graduate Student Interested in Farmer Stress? 
This Graduate Assistantship Could Be For You!

Graduate Research Assistant Position Fall 2022 - Spring 2023

This graduate assistant will support research and extensions work of the FRSAN (Farm Ranch Stress Assistance Network) funded by USDA/ NIFA and HATCH project to support farmers/ ranchers/ agriculture producers and allied workers physical and mental health and wellbeing. This is a half-time GA position (20 hours/ week).

Duties

  • Assist with a variety of project related tasks such as literature review, data analyses (quantitative and/ or qualitative), report and manuscript development, social marketing, and educational materials development concerning farm/ranch/agriculture producersʻ stress, health and wellbeing.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree and currently pursuing an advanced degree in related areas of human development and family sciences education, public health, or related behavioral or social science fields. 
  • Experience in behavioral and social sciences, anthropology, sociology. 
  • Documented research and writing skills. 
  • Skills in conducting needs, assessment, analyzing and describing quantitative, qualitative, and program evaluation data including multivariate analyses. 
  • Fluidity with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, & conducting literature reviews and using programs to develop professional infographics, charts, and reports/ briefings. 
  • Ability to complete weekly tasks independently and in a timely fashion.

Textile Artist Needed at Tori Richards

The Textile Artist is part of the in-house art department, responsible for creating textile art concepts. The Textile Artist must be able to discuss, understand and interpret the needs, ideas and requirements of the internal customer accurately and creatively produce original concepts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design concepts and create original textiles, prints, embroideries in various drawing/ painting techniques for all divisions of Tori Richard.
  • Make modifications to original or purchased art by manipulating, revising, or resizing to fit the designated material or garment.
  • Prepare and create colors ways for strike offs
  • Determine and select the placement and type of embroidery stitches and embroidery thread colors.
  • Present finished art for feedback and make revisions accordingly.
  • Create and present design concepts and style CAD for storyboards.
  • Execute cataloguing, scanning, and organizing new art into server.
  • Performs other duties as required by the Art Director.

Help Care For The Animals Entering Hawai'i as a Quarantine Animal Caretaker
State of Hawaii

The Animal Quarantine Operations Section cares for dogs, cats and related carnivores that are subject to confinement in compliance with Hawaii’s rabies quarantine laws to prevent the entry of rabies; assures efficient movement of dogs and cats: entering, transiting through, and releasing from quarantine; purchases, stocks and disburses equipment and supplies; assists the Animal Disease Control Branch in the handling of livestock for the purpose of inspections and testing; assists the Import Receiving and Compliance Section by housing and caring for animals under investigation or held as evidence.
 
The Animal Care Unit provides daily feeding and care for dogs and cats quarantined to prevent the entry of rabies into the State. Observes and monitors animals under quarantine for signs of rabies and other illnesses.
