Dear friends and colleagues,

These past weeks have been time of great tragedy and loss for many. We say, without reservation, that our hearts go with all those who have experienced the loss of a loved one. We recognise a lack of meaningful representation in mental health services for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities, and it is in times like these that we truly see its impact on human lives. We therefore take time in this newsletter first to reflect on these losses; before all, we are each of us human beings. Our thoughts and solidarity go out to all families experiencing the loss of a loved one.

With sadness this month, we also report what appears to have been the first official use of police powers granted by section 4 of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act. In collaboration with the Community Law Partnership, we have run a series of workshops explaining the content of the Act (and what it means for peoples’ rights). This marks the launch of several rights-focused activities, which we hope will be of benefit to all individuals affected by these draconian new laws. To that end, we’ve also been active this month in going out to visit local camps, bringing information on the PCSC Act and, where we can, sharing some much-needed sun cream and water bottles in a hot July!

Warmest wishes,

Sarah Mann

Crystal's Vardo 10 Year Anniversary
It's 10 Year's Old!
This year on June 22, Crystal's Vardo celebrated its tenth anniversary at The Attenborough Centre in Brighton.

June was a particularly exciting month for us this year, being back on the road after COVID as we toured the play to Wales, Somerset, Hertfordshire, Worcestershire and Durham which included a castle, a prison and a vast ray of other venues!

Update from our casework:

"On 20th July we organised a session for young people to meet the Children’s Rights Alliance England and Just for Kids Law. The session explored what children’s rights are and the young people talked about some of the issues they face. This will be used to feed into a report to the committee on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child."
