    A Special Prayer For Ordinands

A special prayer for all our ordinands - those to be Deaconed and Priested - and their families this year and all those who have been called to ordained ministry in the years before.

Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer God,
who you call your faithful people into a life of service,
help us to nurture and hold in love
all those who are ordained at this time in the life of your Church.
Teach us your ways,
that we might recognise your Mission in the world,
your compassion in caring for others,
and your love deep within every human heart.
We ask this in your Holy Name,
as one undivided Trinity of love,
now and for evermore. Amen

Masters Dissertation Top Award
Meanwhile huge congratulations go to the Rev Belinda Stanley - one of those to be Priested this weekend - after she was awarded a prestigious award for her theological college Masters dissertation.

The dissertation - completed through Queen's Foundation Theological College in Birmingham - is entitled A qualitative study of the spiritual practices of those who care for survivors of torture: an exploration of how some aspects of spiritual practice are perceived to impact upon vicarious trauma and post-traumatic growth.

The British and Irish Association for Practical Theology voted it the best of all those dissertations submitted, meaning Belinda has been invited to attend their four-day conference. She also receives a £200 prize which has funded the provision of Bibles translated into Farsi for the refugee community connected to Carlisle Cathedral.

Contactless Giving Garden Party
Dozens of people gathered for a garden party at Bishop's House in Keswick as the diocese and national church thanked them for their involvement in a year-long online and contactless giving pilot.

The project has raised nearly £85,000 for churches across Cumbria, with 110 contactless units being handed out to congregations from May 2021.

Diocesan Stewardship Enabler Sophie Hodge, who worked with national colleagues on the roll-out of the contactless giving units, said: “It was lovely to be able to hold the garden party in order to thank people for their willingness to get involved. It was very well attended and so we had opportunity to pass on our thanks to many people."

Meanwhile a new contactless giving page has been created on the Diocese of Carlisle's website, providing lots of information for those churches who want to explore more about digital donations.

Contactless Giving - Extra Tips
In the second of three films about the contactless giving pilot, we hear how churches developed best practice to encourage donations.

David Graham, the treasurer of St Lawrence's Crosby Ravensworth provides tips on how they got the most out of their contactless unit, raising £1,938 over 12 months.

    Stewardship - Saying Thank You

One of our stewardship recommendations is to send an annual, personal ‘thank you’ to all your regular givers and clearly communicate that giving to the church enables the mission and ministry that flows from it.

A survey of 2,000 givers in 2020 recorded that less than a third of Anglicans say they are regularly thanked for their giving.

Sending a personal thank you values givers, acknowledges their contribution, and offers a great opportunity to encourage them with the impact that their giving as a group is having on their church’s mission and ministry.

Cumbrian Church Sustainability Film
A Cumbrian church's eco efforts have been flagged up in a Church of England film as General Synod prepares to consider plans to help 16,000 local churches and 4,500 schools reach carbon net zero by the end of the decade.

A film crew visited St Anne's Ings to investigate how introduction of an air-source heat pump, linked up to underfloor heating, has proven to be a low-maintenance, efficient way of heating the building, at a low electricity cost.

Alongside the heating system, secondary glazing on the windows and additional roof insulation has made the church warmer and more welcoming. It is now used more frequently, opening itself up to more sources of income. Both environmentally and financially, St Anne's has set itself up to continue running long into the future.

Energy Footprint Tool
A reminder that the Energy Footprint Tool is still open for churches in the Diocese to complete.

Using information from 2021’s utility bills, the EFT will calculate your church’s carbon footprint, with this information then feeding into the work to reach Net Zero by 2030.

You complete the EFT through the Parish Returns System. There are also instructions and a video guide on the Diocese of Carlisle website.

CAP Volunteers Sought
Maryport churches are set to work alongside Christians Against Poverty (CAP) this autumn, running a Life Skills Course giving local people much-needed skills to combat the current cost of living crisis.

The CAP Life Skills course covers topics such as budgeting to make your money go further; shopping and cooking on a budget; adopting a healthier lifestyle to promote wellbeing and helpful energy saving tips. It does this in a friendly, welcoming group setting with course members learning from each other, as well as from the course content

Life Skills coaches Lisa Andradez and Jacqui Hastewell are hoping to gather a team of volunteers to ensure all those coming on the course are well supported, and if possible, also train more people as Life Skills Coaches so more courses can go ahead both in Maryport, and across the Diocese, helping more people in need.
