Kia ora Kāpiti
Phew! Each week we say that was some wild weather we've had, and then somehow it gets wilder!
We hope you're dry and well, and haven't suffered damage in the winds and rain we've been having. Yesterday we stood up a web page for updates at www.kapiticoast.govt.nz/StormUpdates/, so do check it, or our Facebook page, in the first instance if you're wanting the official word on what's going on. Things can change quickly, so it may take us a little longer to update sometimes because we're checking everything out to make sure we're giving you accurate information.
We have a bumper issue for you this week, with plenty on Council decisions, work updates, rates rebates, and a very paw-sitive announcement!
Mā te wā – have a great week, and stay safe and dry.

Stronger Mana Whenua voice in decision-making
We’ve taken a significant step to strengthening the voice of Mana Whenua in decision-making, by enhancing iwi representation in the Council’s governance structure.
Council has agreed to appoint one representative from each of our three iwi Mana Whenua partners (Ngāti Toa Rangātira, Ngā Hapū o Ōtaki and Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai Charitable Trust) to the Council’s Strategy and Operations Committee, Appeals Hearing Committee, and the Grants Allocation Subcommittee from 1 July 2022, with full voting rights. Iwi representatives will also be invited to participate in all Council meetings but will not have voting rights there.
This will lead to better decision-making, and supports the commitment made when setting down the Council’s Long-term Plan 2021–41 for Mana Whenua and Council to have a mutually mana-enhancing partnership. It also honours the Crown’s Treaty obligations.

Rates rebate applications closing soon
We know some people can find it tough to pay their rates.
If you’re on a low income or get a Working for Families tax credit, you might be able to get help from us or the Department of Internal Affairs to cover some of your rates or water rates.
Closing date for applications is coming up soon. If you meet the criteria, make sure your application is submitted by 30 June 2022.

Dog registrations for the 2022/23 year are about to open, and we’re thrilled to share that from this year, Kāpiti’s canine
pup-ulation will be sporting fetching new reusable tags.
Every year we hear that you’d like to see a more sustainable option for these dog tags, and now we’re delighted to be able to offer new anodised aluminium tags, designed to last a dog’s lifetime.
We’ll be sending out invoices to all owners soon, so make sure your pooch is all tagged up with some place to go!
All dogs must be registered by 5pm, 1 August 2022 to avoid late penalties.

Temporary mural coming to Mahara Place
We’re teaming up with Kāpiti Art Studio to create a temporary mural in Mahara Place.
Weather permitting, local artists will soon paint a mural on the side of the temporary ramp on the stairs near Olive Grove Café.
Kāpiti Art Studio is a creative space where people who face barriers to participating in the arts can express themselves creatively and connect with their community. The artists are looking forward to meeting locals while they’re working in Mahara Place, so do call by and talk to them about their work!

Celebrating our inter-school cross country athletes
Last Wednesday more than 1000 speedy local tamariki (children) took part in the Kāpiti inter-school cross country at Waikanae Park.
Everyone had a great day, there was plenty of determination shown and fantastic attitudes all around!
Thank you to all the volunteers, teachers, Paraparaumu College sports ambassadors, Council staff, and our friends from Barefoot Sport and Zeal; we couldn’t run this annual event without you.
Good luck to those runners going on to represent Kāpiti at the Regional Cross Country at Harcourt Park, Upper Hutt on 5 July.

Tell us your thoughts on coastal erosion and inundation
This wild weather certainly brings coastal issues into sharp relief! Will we be facing these extreme events more frequently and what does that mean for our coast and our community?
The Takutai Kāpiti Coastal Advisory Panel is out and about at community markets, libraries, and community board meetings in June and July.
They also have an ideas board on Have Your Say to get your thoughts on how our community should respond to coastal erosion and inundation from sea-level rise. Join the conversation!

Can you spot the difference?
One of these vials of water has a turbidity level within Aotearoa New Zealand’s drinking water standards, and the other’s 20 times higher than the maximum permitted level.
Turbidity is a measure of solid particles in water, using the amount of light that can pass through. Although turbid water is not always unhealthy or visible to the human eye, high turbidity in drinking water can act as a shield for bacteria and other organisms, and as a result can prevent treatments from disinfecting the water as effectively.
Last week we were able to lift a precautionary boil notice for the Hautere/Te Horo public water supply, thanks to work we’re doing at the Hautere Water Treatment Plant to increase turbidity resilience.

Paraparaumu Transport Hub upgrade on display
We expect to begin work soon on building our new fully accessible, people-friendly transport hub in Paraparaumu.
As well as providing better connections to public transport, the upgraded space will contribute to our vision for a vibrant town centre, with improved open spaces that incorporate local culture through art.
New plantings and seating will feature throughout the upgraded transport hub, along with bus shelters with living roofs (provided by Greater Wellington Regional Council) and a secure parking and charging bay for e-bikes.

Mahara Gallery upgrade on track
In partnership with the Mahara Gallery Trust, our rebuild of Mahara Gallery is on schedule to be completed later this year, with the gallery re-opening in early 2023.
Recent milestones include craning steel framing and beams into place. Construction of the composite concrete floor for the upper level has started and, weather permitting, will be laid this week.
Next up for the team includes installing timber framing for the internal walls and framing for the new roof.
