Crop conditions
Scattered severe storms across Iowa this past week have left us with wind-damage, flooded crops and hail damage. On Saturday a swath of hail devastated an area from Gowrie to Lanyon to Boxholm. We know it is difficult to wait to make decisions, but waiting 5-7 days can help determine plant survivability. This article, Assessing Early Season Weather Damage, summarizes reference material to help make decisions. Herbicide Application Watch!
With our frequent rains and the heat, this crop is really growing! Be sure to pay attention to crop size restrictions on herbicide labels. This protects the crop and helps effectively manage the weeds.
Also, be advised new restrictions on the use of dicamba over-the top products in soybeans (Xtendimax, Engenia, and Tavium) in Iowa, now have a June 20 cutoff date for application which is different than the federal label. With the predicted rain and high temperatures (increased volatility) of this week use of these products will be limited within the remaining time frame of application. Make plans now to discuss options with your agronomy retailer.
Iowa Pest Alert Network
The Iowa Pest Alert Network was launched near the end of May. The goal of this text-based alert network is to provide a short, timely insect pest update to farmers and advisors. You can sign up to receive text messages by following instructions in the link provided to customize your alerts.
Since the Iowa Pest Alert Network has gone live, two insect pest scouting advisories have been released, one for true armyworm and one for stalk borers. You should also be scouting for black cutworms in small corn.

Events
Please consider this your personal invitation to attend any of the field days. They are all free to attend, but some do require pre-registration. Some have meals provided.
June 14. In-Season Manure Application Field Day. This event will take place at the ISU Dairy Farm, located at 52470, 260th St, Ames. Please pre-register for lunch by calling the Story County Extension Office at 515-337-1601.
June 16, 9 a.m. to noon. The North Central Iowa Research Association, the Northern Research Farm and ISU Extension and Outreach will sponsor the research farm field day. A meal will be provided, but registration is not required. This event will be located at the "south" farm, approximately 1.5 miles south of Kanawha. June 18, 8 a.m. to noon. The Southfork Watershed Alliance is hosting a bioreactor field day at the Hunt Farm, located at 28989 Hwy 175, Eldora. Parking will be available at the AgVantage FS with a shuttle provided to the site. Please RSVP by visiting this link.
June 23 from 1-3 p.m. ISU Extension field agronomists Gentry Sorenson, Meaghan Anderson and I will host a herbicide resistance management field day at the Northern Research Farm (south farm). The goal of this field day is to look at effective modes of action for weed control in corn, herbicide rates, and timing of herbicide applications. There is no need to pre-register for this event. Please follow signs for parking. CCA CEUs are available.
June 23 from 1-3 p.m. Meaghan Anderson, Gentry Sorenson and I will be hosting a second herbicide resistance management field day that will focus on effective strategies in soybeans. This field day will take place at the A. Knaphus farm located 1 mile south of McCallsburg on S27. There is no need to register for this event. Please follow signs for off-road parking. CCA CEUs are available.
July 6,7, and 8. Soil Health and Grazing Field Days will be held in three location across central and Northeast Iowa. Join us for an interactive field day looking at soil health parameters, how to assess grazing management, and grazing impacts on soil health.
Corn Rootworm Management Demonstrations to be held around Iowa this summer. Please join us of this event at the Northern Research Farm, on July 12 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. This will be held at the "south" farm, located 1.5 miles south of Kanawha, on the east side of the road. Follow signs for parking.
