 Spring/Summer 2022 at Sturgeon Point!

**Newsletters will now also be available in print format at our two bulletin boards - one in the Park and one at Irene and Forest.  If you know of anyone who may not have access to email, please let them know they can get a newsletter in print format**

Canada Day Weekend BBQ and
Civic Weekend Races!

SPA is thrilled to report that events are back and planning is in full swing!

The Canada Day BBQ in the Park is on Saturday, July 2nd!

The Canada Day BBQ can’t happen without volunteers.  Like any event, volunteers play a critical role in its success.

We are currently looking for volunteers for:

• 9:30: Set up (decorating BBQ area, setting up tables, organizing BBQ area, etc.)
• 11:45: (getting the grills fired up!)
• 12 noon- 2pm: (BBQing, serving the food, keeping food area clean)
• 2pm: clean up

Please email Meri Newton (merinewtonis@yahoo.ca) to put your name forward.

Get your high school children out there so they can earn their volunteer hours!

The Silent Auction Bake sale is also back to fundraise for SPA's capital projects.  We need bakers to volunteer their goods for this event.  Submit what you'll be baking using our online form.

You can find all the details about the event on our website that will be updated as things progress.

184th Anniversary of the Civic Races

The Civic Races will also occur this year and we're in need of people to run the events.  SPA, as always will host the BBQ, but the races have traditionally been put on by the community.

If you have helped organize and run these events in the past, please consider lending your time and expertise again.

Please email spa@sturgeonpoint.com for more information.

Membership Fee and Donations

As a non-profit, the funds we accrue will allow us to take on projects to keep the Point beautiful and safe for all who live here and visit.  If you need a reminder of what membership dollars support, please visit our Membership page on the SPA website.

That's just one of the ways the fees support our community.  If you haven't renewed for 2022, please visit our Registration page and complete the form for all members of your household aged 18+.

If you know someone who is new to the community, please direct them to our website so they can become members, or bring them to the Canada Day BBQ, where a membership table will be set up for registrations and renewals.

All registered members with an email address will be added to the email distribution list.

While Membership Fees are used to cover the usual events and the upkeep and maintenance of the Trust Lands, donations also are an extremely important source of funds for those bigger projects that we'd like to tackle each year.  CRA has informed The City of Kawartha Lakes that, since we are not a Registered Charity, they can no longer issue tax receipts for donations made to Sturgeon Point Association.

Please don't let that deter you and donate!

Our current capital project is the repair and restoration of the Historic Upper Wharf Rain Shelter.  This is a large project that could span several years from planning to completion.  There will be periodic updates on this project via the newsletter.
SPA would like to express condelences to the family of Donna Claire Steen, who passed away on May 27th.
News from SLSC and the Union Church

SLSC - The sailing club plans on running a normal program this summer.  Hopefully it will be a great summer of sailing.

Registration is now open and you can get details of the programs as well as links to the Parent Handbook at https://www.slsc.ca/program/

If a session is full, please still sign up and go on the waitlist. We may be able to juggle the numbers depending on the sizes of all the groups.

We also hope to hold a Gala this year on July 23 - depending on the Covid rules at the time.

Union Church - We are returning to in-person 10:30am Sunday gatherings with a mix of church services and community lectures. Here's the schedule:

Sunday July 3rd — we welcome ZAC MILLAR of the Kawartha Lakes Museum & Archives to speak about the History of the Kawartha Lakes in the early 20th century, with a particular focus on the prohibition era.

Afterword, with refreshments, we are delighted to receive the great-great granddaughter of the family that lived next to the church (on the very spot where the new (almost) fully-flushed wheelchair-accessible bathroom building now sits). Lisa Drolet will present a series of historical images of her family, the community, and of the church being built in 1915

July 10 Church service DEBBIE SHERWIN, United Church of Canada

July 17 Church service DEREK MacLEOD, Presbyterian Church of Canada

July 24 Church service DOUG NORRIS, United Church of Canada

August 7  We welcome Sturgeon Point's BRUCE LOURIE to speak on "Climate Change and Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunities"

Aug 21 Church service RICK FEE, Presbyterian Church of Canada

The "Holy Loo" project is coming along nicely, with huge thanks to its builder, Dave Stewart.
Hollywood North in the Point!

If you were around the area of the Union Church and along Forest Road the weekend of June 11/12, you may have noticed Erik Nyhaus and his crew shooting a short film. SPA would like to thank Erik for being so thoughtful and respectful by notifying SPA and residents who are in the areas that the filming was taking place.

Hopefully, we'll all get to see the finished project!
City of Kawartha Lakes Municipal Elections
Autumn 2022

Voting will be held from October 14-24, 2022 by Internet and Telephone Voting.
Get all the information on the candidates and how to vote on the Municipal Elections website.

SPA will hold an all candidate meeting after the AGM on the Labour Day weekend.  More information to follow.
The Upper Wharf Rain Shelter Restoration Committee is still working to put together the Project Outline and Scope.  We are brainstorming on the best ways to approach fundraising, as this is a project of significant size and scope.

If anyone has experience with fundraising and can lend their expertise, please email upperwharf@sturgeonpoint.com

Thank you.
Spring is almost over and I don't know about the rest of you, but I've been distracted (literally and mentally) by all that has been going on in the news.  There must be some good news out there, but the media seems to focus on the tragic, sad and scary.

After COVID, I was looking forward to a 21st Century Roaring 20s, but we haven't see than yet.  Still, like the Roaring 20s of the 20th Century, we have great cocktails to enjoy.  Now, if only the music would catch up.

All of the news I've been listening to could had me thinking "What a trainwreck"... Thus, the Trainwreck cocktail.  It's a fitting cocktail to sip to try to have a giggle.  They say if you don't laugh, you'll cry.  It may take a couple... the drink only has just over 1.5 shots.

How do you make a Trainwreck?  (I think Donald Trump just wrote a book on it.)

Ingredients:

Ice cubes
1-ounce vanilla vodka*
1/3 ounce orange liqueur (recommended: Cointreau)
1/3 ounce creme de cacao
Splash lemon-lime soda (Sprite)
Sweet and sour mix*

*if you can't find vanilla vodka in the LCBO or Sweet and Sour Mix, you make your own:
  • Vanilla Vodka - 1 cup vodka + 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Sweet and sour mix - equal parts water, sugar, lime juice and lemon juice.  Fresh is best, but RealLemon or RealLime is also great.

Directions
  1. In a rocks glass filled with ice, add the vanilla vodka, orange liqueur, and creme de cacao.
  2. Add a splash of lemon-lime soda and fill the rest of the glass with sweet and sour mix. Stir using either a decorative stirrer, a spoon or your longest digit, in a pinch.
