EORNA News - June 2022

Welcome Message by EORNA President

It was an absolute pleasure to meet you in person in Stavanger for the 10th EORNA Congress!

I wish to extend my warmest thanks to all those who worked hard to make this event a real success. Many of you came to the congress to share research results and professional experience.

We cannot stress enough the importance of research in perioperative care, which helps to advance perioperative nursing care, provide innovative solutions for the safety of the patient undergoing surgery and allow us to be the voice of perioperative nurses in Europe and beyond.

Let's stay in contact and continue networking until we meet again at the 11th EORNA Congress, which will take in Valencia, Spain, 16 - 18 May, 2024.

Please mark your calendars!

I wish you all a wonderful summer holiday season.
Sincerely,
May Karam
EORNA President

EORNA 2022 Updates

The 10th EORNA Congress took place from 12 to 15 May in Stavanger, Norway. Over 600 participants from 37 countries joined us for 2.5 days of innovative scientific sessions about robotics, OR of the future, Patient Safety, Healthy Workplaces and much more.

For the first time in 2022 we also had a session dedicated to Clinical Case study. On top of the scientific, several Hospital Visits were planned at the Stavanger University Hospital and the SAFER who welcome over 85 participants.

The next edition of the EORNA Congress will take place from 16 to 18 May, 2024 in Valencia, Spain.

European Surgical Smoke Coalition launches the first Policy Report of its kind, exploring the dangers of surgical smoke in Europe.

We are delighted to inform you that the European Surgical Smoke Coalition, of which EORNA is a member/co-founder, and May Karam the co-President, published its European Policy Overview Report titled “Surgical Smoke – an underestimated health hazard”.

This report, released on 16 June, 2022, raises awareness of surgical smoke and highlights its impact as an occupational hazard which critically needs to be addressed to guarantee the safety of all operating room staff and patients.

Specifically, it provides a high-level overview of the issue of surgical smoke, evidenced by the latest clinical studies and the risks for HCPs. It also outlines existing practices and new measures needed at both EU and national levels for enhanced protection of HCP health and safety. It finally offers a series of (below-listed) recommendations for all who have a role to play: from policymakers to regulators to hospital leaders and medical associations.

What can you do? Please like/share/repost the LinkedIn post with your colleagues, friends & family, and whoever is invested in protecting healthcare professionals' occupational health and safety in ORs. If this can be of use to conversations with your hospital managers, please use it! And if you need more information or guidance, let the Surgical Smoke Coalition know!

News from AFISO, French-speaking OR Nurse Association from Belgium

AFISO organized a webinar on 23 May, 2022 with topics such as: ecology in the operating room and standardization of processes. The webinar was a great success with 135 attendees.

The next webinar took place on 22 June, 2022.

The topics were: "How to support the professional fulfilment of generations Y and Z?", the "Switch Philosophy" and "The presentation of the MyORCO project". Exceptionally this webinar was only available for members because AFISO’s general meeting was being held at the same time.
EORNA is a partner in the dissemination process of the MyORCO project (My Operating Room nurse Coach). MyORCO is an Erasmus project which involves partners from Finland, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Greece, France and Belgium (coordinator of the project).

This three-year project aims to create educational videos related to the ergonomics of practices of the OR nurses in the common basis of their work and each surgical speciality and anaesthesia.  The videos will be available online on a multilingual platform. At the European level, OR nurses in the wards and OR nursing students can be trained anywhere and at any time in an autonomous manner in those important competencies.

At the end of the project (October 2023), MyORCO will provide the following intellectual productions: educational videos, a website and a user guide.

The different partners met during a meeting in Athens and shot and validated videos. They continue to develop the website. In the meeting was discussed the results of the focus groups organized by each partner to improve the intellectual productions.

MyORCO team is glad to collaborate with EORNA on the dissemination of best and safe nursing practices in the OR. We are happy to keep you informed of the progress of this project.
