I cannot carry all this people by myself, for it is too much for me.
                                                             -Numbers 11:14

The crisis in this week’s Torah portion, Baha'alotecha, was not the first big challenge Moses had faced in leadership. It was the fourth. Moses has reached the limit of his patience. He is in despair as is evident in his words to God:

Why have you brought this trouble on your servant? What have I done to displease you, that you put the burden of all these people on me? Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms, as a nurse carries an infant, to the land you promised on oath to their forefathers? Where can I get meat for all these people? They keep wailing to me, ‘Give us meat to eat’. I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me. If this is how you are going to treat me, put me to death right now – if I have found favour in your eyes – and do not let me face my own ruin.

The outburst appears to be a complete breakdown. Have you ever been in that place? Have there been times when you have worked hard to succeed and it doesn't seem like you are really making a difference? It's upsetting when you want to accomplish something and feel that you are not having an impact. The despair can be so heavy that you just don't want to go on. We see that despair in Moses' outpouring of emotion to God. Like Jonah, he asks for death rather than suffer the feeling of failure.

Having a vision about what you are moving toward and trying to impact is integral. Measuring your progress towards that vision helps you understand the challenges and increments of success. When the reality doesn't line up with your vision, a sense of failure can damage your self image. God's solution for Moses was to share the spirit of prophesy across 70 elders. This allowed the vision to be shared and championed by more leaders in the community.

Sometimes you just need other people on your team, in your cheering section, in your camp, that get you. People that see and appreciate that your vision can change everything for the better. We can also be that for others, lifting each other up and finding the sparks, instead of focusing on the shells surrounding them.

Volunteer for our Oneg Shabbat team. It's a ONCE A MONTH commitment to shop, deliver, prepare and setup our spread of goodies and beverages that our congregation enjoys each Friday before our Kabbalat Shabbat service. Your expenses are reimbursed, thanks to our Deborah Sisterhood and our members who sponsor the Oneg Shabbat. There is a budget and a list of items to purchase, or bring your own flair to this act of kindness. There are so many ways to help your community at Anshe Sholom. Is this the one for your family?
KEHILAH / BIKUR HOLIM WORKING GROUP
A Message from the Kehilah / Bikur Cholim Working Group:

Throughout the pandemic, the focus of Bikur Cholim was doing phone checks to Temple Congregants, offering a friendly voice and support where needed.  In-home visits have been on hold for over two years.  As we transition to in-person events at Temple and in our social lives, it's time to once again to focus on home visiting to those in  our Congregation who would benefit from this Mitzvah.  To this end, a training session will be provided by Gabriele McSween, Clinical Social Worker and RSW at Hamilton Jewish Family Services. This will take place in the Temple Library on Wednesday, June 22nd beginning at 6:30 p.m.  Although in person attendance is preferred, the session will also be available on Zoom. We have a number of recruits already, we are also opening up this opportunity to all Congregants who are interested. Please keep in mind that this is a first step in preparing for once again doing in home visits and these will only be done as the current state of the pandemic allows.  The health and safety of all concerned is, of course, a prime consideration.

Please email Enid Aaron at belowparfour@cogeco.ca if you are interested in taking the education session.

The Clergy Liaison Working Group is again active and is now available to contact.  In the interest of keeping our leadership up to date with the interests of our members, we are encouraging any and all feedback (held in the strictest confidence), that can be addressed by the Working Group.  We will be communicating regularly with Rabbi Cohen and Cantor Baruch.  We look forward to hearing from you.

SUMMER HAPPENINGS
Let's enjoy some backyard parties at our member's homes this summer! Join us on any of these Saturday nights. Please choose at least ONE to come out to. We want to meet and mingle with our new and longstanding members. All you need is a portable lawn chair and a food offering to share with others. We'll supply the beverages (BYO wine or beer if you wish!), great music and a brief Havdallah service! Hope to see all of our members there:)
