The release of this newsletter marks an ancient happening celebrated for millennia around the globe. On or around 21 June every year the Earths South Pole is at its farthest distance away from the Sun. Known as the WINTER SOLSTICE in the Southern Hemisphere this astronomical event marks the shortest day and longest night of the year.
The Winter Solstice in 2022 is Tuesday 21 June at 6.43pm South Australian time.
For cultures whose awareness is aligned with the cycles of the Earth
the solstice marks the depth of winter and each day following brings closer the promise of Spring. Solstice derives from two Latin words: sol and sistere meaning sun and to stand still. To those with an intimate knowledge of the skies the solstice is a time when the Sun and Moon appear to stop moving across the sky.
From a yogic perspective the solstice a powerful time to remember our lives are part of a larger order - always changing - always renewing. SPRINGWOOD STUDIO is pleased to offer classes and events that help celebrate this special time of year.
