SALTAIRE'S ALLOTMENTS
A CORE FEATURE OF THE MODEL VILLAGE
A small group of Club researchers has been working on the history of the village’s allotments – and their significance as part of a Victorian model village.

Club secretary Les Brook will present their findings which include:
  • The discovery of allotments now lost
  • A long-disappeared but substantial collection of piggeries
  • The theft of pigeons!
  • A Saltaire house you’ve never heard of
  • Fowls of the Sultan and Golden Spangled Hamburghs.

And history continues to be made – by Veg on the Edge and our Shipley Town Council which is now responsible for the allotments – so you’ll hear about those developments too.

PLEASE NOTE: a paper on the history of the village allotments will be posted on https://www.saltairehistoryclub.org/research at least 1 week before the meeting.

The venue is the Saltaire Methodist Church lounge. The church fronts Saltaire Road BD18 3HJ. The lounge is at the rear.

COMING SOON TO A HISTORY CLUB NEAR YOU
It used to be called the Saltaire Archive but things have changed… dramatically. Now called the Saltaire Collection, it’s bidding for museum accreditation and in the near future will be re-housed in a new building on Caroline Street.

On Thursday 15 September at 7pm, Maggie Smith from the Saltaire Collection will fill us in on the Collection’s past, present and future.

COMING LATER...
BUT PUT YOUR THINKING CAPS ON NOW!
On Thursday 8 December, we’re planning an ambitious evening focused on memories of Salts Mill. We’re hoping to deliver multiple presentations, (for example) on migration to find work, mill work itself, workers’ celebrations and trips – using (for example) personal testimony, videos and written evidence.

You can help us NOW!

Contact us at saltairehistorymail@gmail.com with (for example):
  • names and contact details of local folk/your relatives who used to work in the mill
  • newspaper articles that illuminate the experience of working in the mill
  • photos of works outings...

THE CLUB DOESN’T RUN ITSELF!

Yes, we continue to need members who will put in a shift during 2022

There's lots to do...and we're in the business of matching your talents, interests and availability to the tasks that need addressing.
