I decided to become a journalist at the age of 16, when I took my first journalism class in high school in Katy, Texas. As the eldest daughter of first-generation immigrants, I have always wanted to amplify the voices of those like me. I grew up both in the States and overseas, and saw first-hand the value of a strong, independent local press.
Being a journalist allows me to share the stories of our diverse communities to make where we live better for all of us. It’s not always an easy job but there is no better satisfaction than to help bring awareness to a community’s plight, educate readers about an important issue or bring about solutions through impactful conversations with local leaders.
I was excited to begin covering Tarrant County as one of the Fort Worth Report’s reporting fellows this winter, and I feel even more privileged to join the staff full time this month as our newsroom’s growth and economic development reporter.
It’s especially gratifying that I came here through the Report’s partnership with Report for America, a nationwide service program that places journalists in newsrooms across the country to help strengthen local communities and democracy. Being selected as a corps member allows me to serve in one of the country’s fastest growing cities and document the impact that growth has on residents’ quality of life.
The Fort Worth Report newsroom started raising funding June 1 for their portion of my salary. We’re grateful for the donations that have come in already, but we’re just getting started. Fort Worth Report has a goal of raising $35,000 this year to sustain my reporting. This is how we can ensure that our community gets the type of local reporting it needs.
