Summer Learning Continues!

Visit any BECLS library branch or our website to sign up for this summer's reading challenges for all ages. We also hope you'll join us for some of this week's wonderful events, detailed below. And if you can't make it into the library for our weekly craft activity, you can find instructions for creating along below, plus a STEAM activity to do at home. Thanks for joining the summer fun!

The Animals of Walton's Hollow
Get up close and personal with some furry friends! The Animals of Walton's Hollow will visit the Blue Earth County Library parking lot on Tuesday, June 21 at 10:30am. This event features a full walk-in petting zoo of forty animals, large and small and everything in between.
Tween Pizza and Paint-by-Numbers
Come get crafty and make your next masterpiece with us! Tweens (ages 9-12) are invited to enjoy some pizza and paint a picture using a paint-by-number kit in the Blue Earth County Library auditorium on Tuesday, June 21 at 12:30pm.
Experience all the magic of the library—in the great outdoors! Visit Sibley Park on Thursday, June 23 at 10:30am or Mapleton Library Park at 3:30pm to play and create with sidewalk chalk, jump ropes, the Imagination Playground, and so much more.
Join us for some fun activities on the lawn at Sibley Park on Friday, June 24 at 6pm, before our friends at Mankato Community Education present Movies Under the Stars! Zootopia is a comedy-adventure set in the modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia. Determined to prove herself, Officer Judy Hopps, the first bunny on Zootopia’s police force, jumps at the chance to crack her first case—even if it means partnering with scam-artist fox Nick Wilde to solve the mystery. It’s big fun for all shapes and species!

The Weekly STEAM Project: Robot Hand!

Project Source: Kaplan

Supplies Needed
Standard drinking straws
Jumbo straws
White card stock
Scissors
Pencil
Yarn or string
Tape

Instructions:

  1. Trace hand (adult hand recommended for larger size) onto card stock. Cut hand outline out with scissors. Place hand back onto paper hand to mark location of joints. Fold the paper hand at the marked joint locations.
  2. Cut the standard straws into ¼", ½", 1", and 2 ¼" sizes. Tape standard straws onto hand, and tape the jumbo straw onto the wrist.
  3. Using a different yarn color for each finger, cut five strands of yarn into 2-foot-long pieces. Be sure to knot one end of each piece of yarn. Thread one yarn strand through each finger. Use a different yarn color for each finger. Have all colors meet at the wrist.
  4. Pull on the strings individually and in combination to explore the wonder of robotic hands!

Questions to discuss with your kids about ROBOTIC PROSTHETICS:

  • What happens when you pull an individual string?
  • What happens when you pull all the strings?
  • Who might benefit from this technology? What things could it enable them to do?
  • What material in your project acts as the hand's "bones"? What material is acting as the hand's "tendons" and "muscles"?
