Dear <<First Name>>,

We love the month of June—and not just because it marks the beginning of summer.

It is also National Indigenous History Month, with National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrated on June 21. Although 30 days is not enough to celebrate the heritage and resilience of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples, we encourage you to take time to learn something new and participate in the myriad of events happening across Canada.

To commemorate this special time, we have opened a few more spaces to our Indigenous cultural awareness course. If you are interested, you can read more about the Path here

In other Centre news, as we prepare for our Annual General Meeting (on the 28th!), we revisit all the exciting projects we have had the privilege to support, while highlighting the organizations doing the heavy lifting. Stay tuned, our annual report will be available on our website shortly.

Connect with our program managers:

Chrissy Diavatopoulos and Brian Clifford will attend BCNPHA’s Regional Education, Networking & Tradeshow (RENT)—Prince George event on June 16.

Scott Stager Piatkowski and Renée Hébert will be present at CHF Canada’s 2022 Annual Meeting in Halifax on June 16–18.

Plancher—a unifying project in the making

Last week, we had the pleasure to brainstorm and ideate with 60 people representing just as many organizations involved in Québec’s community housing sector. Our collective efforts resulted in seven project proposals presented by participants at Plancher’s prototyping session.

  1. A consortium to pool assets, resources, and industry expertise
  2. One or more regional organizations capable of generating community obligations
  3. A pooled fund of financial resources
  4. A solidarity co-op to support struggling housing organizations
  5. A group of supporting organizations for the creation and development of social trusts
  6. A universally accessible needs assessment tool for adapted housing
  7. A purchasing company capable of developing “signature projects”

The presentations are available on the Centre’s website so that all interested can comment on proposed ideas. Our team will consider all opinions and assess the feasibility of the proposals.

Initiatives with the most transformative potential will be brought to life with Centre funding, human resources and partners.

Standing up for tenant rights in New Brunswick

New Brunswick has the weakest protections for tenants compared to anywhere else in the country and the pandemic has exacerbated the situation, with evictions and unscrupulous landlord practices going unchecked. Two organizations applied for funding from the Centre with the expressed intent of standing up for the region’s tenants, they were awarded funding on the condition they join forces.

From house to home: safe spaces for us

The Centre awarded $49,986 to Spence Neighbourhood Association to conduct a participatory research project focused on identifying gaps in service for Indigenous people who are transitioning from their home communities to urban living. The report is now available on their website.

Launching soon: A plan to build 22,000 Indigenous-owned housing units

ONPHA’s plan is a first-of-its-kind for our province. It shows that building at least 22,000 units over 10 years will work to address the disproportionate rates of core housing need among off-reserve Indigenous households, and result in economic benefits and cost savings totaling $14.3 billion.
