Presidents Report

The first half of 2022 has come and gone so quickly!

In September
AWTRS will be holding their first face-to-face meeting since 2018. The meeting will be held in Sydney from September 12 – 14, and we have a fantastic line up of speakers! In addition to all of the latest and cutting-edge science you will hear about at the meeting, we have also planned a number of social events for attendees (all included in the registration!) including an EMCR networking event, and the conference dinner that will be on a cruise around Sydney harbour! Make sure you keep an eye on your inbox for more announcements as we get closer to September, and we hope to see many of our AWTRS members and colleagues there.

We have another chock-a-block newsletter for you, in this issue we have a piece from our AWTRS 2021 Young Investigator Award recipient, Dr Hanif Haidari, we will get to know Dr Rachael Moses in a one minute with an AWTRS member, and read about Alireza’s experience attending the WUWHS 2022 Congress.

We always like hearing about what our members are getting up to and their achievements, and always welcome newsletter items from AWTRS members. If you attend a conference that is of interest to the AWTRS membership, would like to be a profiled researcher or a featured ECR, please contact our newsletter editor
Xanthe.

AWTRS 2021 Young Investigator Award
Dr Hanif Haidari

Each year the AWTRS recognises the achievements of our younger members who may be enrolled as a PhD student or have their PhD awarded within 2 years, through the Young Investigator Award. The Society wishes to once again congratulate our 2021 winner, Dr Hanif Haidari. Having recently completed his PhD in the field of Biomedical Sciences from the University of South Australia, with his thesis titled “Development of stimuli-responsive silver nanoparticles delivery system for infected wounds”, Hanif is currently appointed as Research Associate at Future Industries Institute, University of South Australia, where he uses his strong background in nanomaterials development, to create safer and smarter technologies with the capacity to rapidly diagnose bacterial infection while simultaneously providing on-demand treatment to effectively eliminate pathogenic bacteria without negatively affecting the surrounding tissue. Click here to read more about Hanif's research, which aims to develop smart antibacterial hydrogel specific to the wounds, provide a targeted and more localised treatment for wound infection, reduce bacterial resistance, and develop a diagnostic dressing to detect early signs of infections in real-time.
WUWHS 2022 Conference Attendance Report

                                           Alireza Hassanshahi

The AWTRS is proud to support the participation of its members in international wound and tissue repair meetings through its annual travel awards. In the past few years, many of these have been held in person and online. This year, the society supported Alireza Hassanshahi's online attendance at the 6th Congress of World Union of Wound Healing Societies (WUWHS) which was held as a hybrid meeting in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, from the 1st to the 5th of March. AWTRS Member Publications

The AWTRS believes that promoting the knowledge and interchange between scientists, healthcare professionals, industry and other individuals that have an interest in wound healing and tissue repair will lead to improved wound outcomes. With this in mind, we aim to promote the research produced by our members with the addition of the following list of selected AWTRS member publications from the first half of 2022. If you would like to have your research included in our future issues, please email Xanthe (xanthe.strudwick@unisa.edu.au) with the details of your publication.

One Minute with an AWTRS Member
Rae Moses

This issue, we would like to feature EMCR member Dr Rachael Moses, a Research Associate from University of Melbourne, who is in the process of developing a 3D chronic wound model to better assess novel wound healing therapies. Click here to spend one minute with Rae and get to know more about her and her research.
