June 2022
Karzo welcomes you to our June Business and Logistics Newsletter. Increasing inflationary pressures and associated costs continue to affect Myanmar. The power outages associated with hot season may be abating, but solutions to the long-term energy supply concerns see no signs of progress. The long-awaited China-Myanmar railway route has officially started operating, following on from the opening of the China-Lao PDR railway earlier this year; additionally, the China-Myanmar border at Muse finally re-opens. On Myanmar’s western borders, both India and Bangladesh are looking towards increased connectivity via land and sea. Commodities such as oil and wheat continue to feel the damage done by Ukraine supply issues, with the Myanmar Kyat reflecting this accordingly. Globally, supply chains continue to struggle to return to “normal” pre-pandemic conditions. Tech megastock concerns seen in Q1 2020 seem not to have affected Asian markets as a number of LogTech firms raise equity investments across the region. Closer to home, the Myanmar MNO formerly known as Telenor has been rebranded to ATOM (Advancing Telecommunications of Myanmar) by purchaser M1 Group; a post-sale transaction will see local partner Shwe Byain Phyu ultimately owning 80%. Further details on the above and more can be found below.
