"There is more in you than you think" - Kurt Hahn

Dear Parents

The younger children were thrilled to take part in their Infant Adventure Week this week. With overflowing enthusiasm, they thoroughly enjoyed their Bush Craft activities on site lead by trainers from Grip Adventure, visiting the Wild Boar Park, Parkview, the RSPB Information Centre at Fairhaven Lake and creating art sculptures on the beach! Our emphasis on character education is central to these challenges for the younger children, and the reason why the older children were taken on their recent residential trips.

The variety of Sports that the children have the opportunity to play competitively was highlighted this week in their rounders, tag rugby and athletics' fixtures, and the Year 3 and 4 children took part in an introduction to golf day.

Finally, tenacity and courage were demonstrated by the children who participated in the Longest Day Walk/ Run this morning. Year 6 practised their communication skills when making new friends on the Year 7 Discovery Day this week, and on their visit to the Imperial War Museum in London today.

Nursery

The Bees this week have been exploring our topic around fruit and vegetables. We have been exploring through messy play using potatoes and oranges to create different marks. During outdoor play the children have been planting vegetables to support hand eye co-ordination and counting.

They have also taken part in a find and match activity outside matching together fruit and vegetables which are the same promoting language and communication.

This week in Ladybirds we have been doing lots of fun activities to help to further develop our fine motor skills.

Reception

The infant children have all experienced a fantastic week of outdoor learning and the weather has been so kind to us. We have learned how to toast a marshmallow on an open fire and very yummy they were too and then we combined with Year 1 for a tug of war competition and team games.

At Fairhaven Lake we learned all about the different birds both on and around the lake. We saw some beautiful goslings, had great fun on the adventure playground and finished the day off with a lolly. We had lots of compliments about how smart we looked and our behaviour.

Year 1

What an exciting week we have had this week; we love our usual classroom challenges, but this week’s adventurous challenges have kept us working and playing hard all week!

We have built dens from sticks, made a fire and toasted marshmallows, balanced on a slackline, spotted birds, looked at their nests and made our own versions. Then we used Andy Goldsworthy’s amazing art pieces to make our own temporary art works on the beach, creating spirals, patterns and holes with natural materials, working with a partner and then creating a whole class project using curves and lines.

Year 2

“The best week ever” is how Year 2 summed up adventure week. Each day we have been taking part in different activities which have involved forest skills, den building and fire lighting. We had a land mini-beast hunt and learnt about the wildfowl on Fairhaven Lake.

A walk along the promenade for beach art and to learn about Victorian seaside holidays and finally the Wild Boar Park on Friday. Each day a new adventure, we walked miles and had loads of fun. Well done Year 2.

Year 3

As part of Year 3 Science, we planted a variety of seeds including tomatoes, courgettes, pumpkins, and lettuce. We worked with Mr Shepherd and together we put our plants in the school greenhouse. This week we all took the plants home as they had grown significantly and needed to be planted in the garden. We look forward to tasting the vegetables and maybe even making a salad or delicious soup to share with our families.

Year 3 have impressed so much this week with their attitude to the termly assessments, the children tried their best even when the questions were challenging. Everyone showed great determination, resilience, and kindness to others!

Year 4

Year 4 have settled back into lessons and work after their exciting residential last week. They wrote about their reflections and experiences at Borwick Hall with many of them saying they did not realise how brave and strong they were.

We have been busy this week completing our end of year assessments in English comprehension, Mathematics, grammar and spelling.

For Science this week, we have been making our own switches and testing them in a circuit seeing how we can complete and break a circuit.

Mrs Briggs
Year 5

This week was a busy one for Year 5 following on from an amazing week at Castlehead.

The children have completed all of their Summer assessments and been working hard for the Year 5 and 6 play.

Year 6
Despite the children experiencing a mixture excitement and nerves on Wednesday morning ahead of their Discovery Day, they returned exhilarated with lots of tales about their special day. Alongside Maths and English, the children were given a series of investigations and experiments in Science plus learned all about the rules of Heraldry in history – making their own shields.

Excellent effort from all those who participated in the Wyre and Fylde Rugby Festival on Tuesday - extra well done to those who scored trys, Casey, Esme, Billy and Charlie.

Finally, in Science this week Year 6 have been investigating the effects that tobacco and alcohol have on the body, well done Jenay and Freddie for their excellent summary of both the short-term and long-term negative effects.

Art News

As part of their Adventure Week the children in Year 2 have been inspired by artist Andy Goldsworthy to create their own land art. The children had to work in groups, and create 3 different pieces of art entitled Circle, Line and Spiral using only natural materials found on the beach. Well done Year 2!
