They’re back! Join The Yard and the Chilmark Library for a free night of outdoor music and dancing with everyone’s favorite band. Bring a picnic, or just come for the show, but be sure to wear your dancing shoes!

Wednesday, July 6, 5:00 PM: Weedy Wisdom for Curious Foragers, author Talk with Rebecca Randall Gilbert of Native Earth Teaching Farm.
Rebecca’s book on foraging for beginners arose out of a summer of foraging classes with Camp Jabberwocky at Native Earth Teaching Farm in Chilmark. It focuses on a few very common edible weeds and simple preparations and dives deeply into the philosophy of foraging and of life in general. In this presentation, the author will speak about the benefits of friendship with the plant world. She’ll introduce you to a couple of her favorites, and offer ideas for integrating foraging into ordinary life.
Rebecca Gilbert, of Native Earth Teaching Farm, has been foraging since childhood on the same piece of land. Her focus when harvesting is the weeds, invasives, and aliens that tend to take over, and the recognition of our own position as interactive, embedded members of our ecosystems. She also raises goats for clearing, pets, teaches indigo dyeing and fiber arts, yoga, and uses her farm to connect people to nature in as many ways as she can. A visit to the teaching farm is always an adventure!

Wednesday, July 13 at 5:00: James Richardson, author of Discovering a Lost Vineyard House: The Archaeology and History of the John and Experience Mayhew House Site on Martha's Vineyard.
In the 1970’s Dick Burt located a colonial house site Chilmark. Burt’s deed research proved that it was the home of John and Experience Mayhew, famous missionaries to the Wampanoag, and grandson and great grandson of Thomas Mayhew Sr. who had purchased the right to settle on Martha’s Vineyard in 1642. The Chilmark house, dating from 1672 to 1758 was the home of the two families, which included wives and sixteen children over the period of its 86 years of occupation.
The excavations in 1985 by the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Museum of Natural History resulted in the discovery of two cellar holes and a surrounding sheet midden of artifacts and refuse. This book presents the analysis and historic background of 15,000 artifacts and 10,000 animal bones of food remains, as well as the history of the English settlement of the Vineyard from 1642 to circa 1765 when the Massachusetts Bay Colony in Boston was the major source of political and economic support, as well as the Mayhew family and the Wampanoag who have resided on the Island for over 10,500 years.
Dr. James B. Richardson III is an emeritus chief curator of the Section of Anthropology, Carnegie Museum of Natural History and emeritus professor, Department of Anthropology, University of Pittsburgh. He has conducted extensive archaeological research in Peru, Western Pennsylvania and on Martha’s Vineyard. Richard L. Burt is an Island archaeologist and historian who has made significant contributions through his research, based on-site surveys and surface collections, participating and co-directing excavations and for his contributions to study of colonial house sites and colonial history on Martha’s Vineyard.

He has been writing Vineyard Skies, a weekly astronomy column for the Vineyard Gazette for almost 42 years.

Bob Drogin and Tom Hamburger have been friends for 50 years. Join us in conversation with these two illustrious journalists with storied careers.
Bob Drogin spent 38 years as a Los Angeles Times reporter and editor, based in New York, Manila, Johannesburg and Washington, where he was White House editor during the Trump administration. He has won or shared numerous journalism awards, including a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service, and is author of “Curveball: Spies, Lies and the Conman who Caused a War,” which won the Cornelius Ryan award for best non-fiction book on international affairs in 2007. He spends most of the year in West Tisbury.
Tom Hamburger is an investigative journalist on the national desk of the Washington Post, where he focuses on the intersection of money and politics in the White House, Congress and Supreme Court. He shared a Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting and other awards for his work on the Trump campaign and administration ties to Russia. He is co-author of “One Party Country: The Republican Plan for Dominance in the 21st Century.” He spends most of the year at work.

Wednesday, July 27 at 5:00: The Russian Invasion of Ukraine and The Growing Danger of Nuclear War ,with Dr. Ira Helfand of the Peace Development Fund.
Join Dr. Ira Helfand as he weighs in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the growing dangers and potential consequences of a nuclear war, and the “Back from the Brink” movement in the United States, a national grassroots campaign seeking the abolition of nuclear weapons and fundamental change in U.S. nuclear weapons policy.
Ira Helfand, MD was educated at Harvard College and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is a founding member of the International Steering Group of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapon, ICAN, the recipient of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize, and the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, He is also co-Founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility. Helfand co-authored PSR’s report, Nuclear Famine: 2 Billion at Risk?, which outlines the global health consequences of regional nuclear war. He currently practices as an internist and urgent care physician at Family Care Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Join Felix Neck and Chilmark Library in a hands-on science experience - owl pellet dissection! Pellets are a record of what owls have eaten, and scientists can study them to learn more about the owl and the ecosystems in which they live. When kids dissect owl pellets, they can see and identify the tiny bones from that owl's meal, learn about the owl's diet, and the owl's place in the food web.

LEGO club encourages children to learn while having fun! Creativity, problem solving, spatial reasoning, and teamwork are some of the skills your child will learn while playing with LEGOs.
Join us every Wednesday from 2:30 PM to 3 PM in the Chilmark Library Meeting room to play with LEGOs. We provide the LEGOs, you provide the creativity! This program is free and open to the public. Registration is not required.
