Celebrated for more than 100 years, though mostly in Black communities, Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when enslaved Blacks in Galveston, Texas, first heard the news of the end of the Civil War and the outlawing of chattel slavery.
It is the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was designated in 1983. You may remember the reaction to the federally established Juneteenth holiday was at first blush mixed: While many expressed joy that a longstanding activist goal had been achieved, some critics said Juneteenth brought too much attention to America’s race differences; others said, in claiming Juneteenth as a holiday, leaders in Washington risked congratulating themselves for progress they still owed Black citizens.
For many of us, the temptation in celebrating Juneteenth will be to say, “Look at how far we’ve come,” even while so many people are still languishing under the brutal legacy of chattel slavery, even while we’ve still got children separated from their parents on the border, even while we still have human trafficking rampant throughout the U.S., even while we have racial disparities in health, education, employment.
Personally, I’m grateful for the opportunity to commemorate Juneteenth in worship this coming Sunday, and not because I want us to pat ourselves on the back. No, rather, it offers an opportunity to create a powerful space to sustain and transmit the truth about the making of the United States while drawing strength in community to seek racial justice as the modern movement for Civil Rights continues to gather momentum.
We still have work to do. Let us give thanks in worship, but then let us address as a community the challenge at hand: how is God leading us to continue this work?

Juneteenth Celebration
 This Sunday, June 19, Trinity's Racial Justice Advocacy Group (RJAG) will be hosting a celebration of Juneteenth. Everyone is invited to learn more about this holiday and have cake with us on the patio. Join us as we rejoice in the victory over slavery!

Sienna Youth Center is WOWed!
 The immense generosity of our congregation, and love for Siena Youth Center, generated $8,280 in summer camp scholarship donations during May! The camp will host 120 students, and 40 middle schoolers and high schoolers who will help run the program. At a cost of $150 per student for the June/July camp, your kind donations will go far in allowing under privileged students to stay active this summer. Thank you again for your generosity.

Memorial Service for John Edmonds
A memorial service for John will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Friday, July 8th at 2:00 p.m. with a reception following. This date is John's birthday, so it is fitting we will celebrate his entry into the church triumphant on that day. We invite all who cared for or were cared by John to join in the remembrances.

 The youth of Trinity Presbyterian Church will be gathering for a fellowship event on Sunday, June 26th at 11:30 am. We will be catching up with one another, playing some games, talking about plans and hopes for the summer, and chowing down on some pizza. We hope you will join us!

In Person Worship at 10am
 Please join us in our sanctuary Sunday at 10am. Trinity is committed to providing a safe environment and to ensure a welcoming and inclusive worship experience for all.
The following health and safety guidelines will remain in place until further notice.
- Masks are to be worn on the Sanctuary level at all times.
- All monetary gifts can be offered via the QR Code available in the Sanctuary and on the livestream OR online here.
- Those gathered for worship will exit the building (this includes the Narthex) immediately following the Postlude to greet each other outside as weather allows.
If you are experiencing symptoms, are self-isolating due to travel, or have had close contact to a confirmed positive Covid-19 case, please refrain from attending in-person worship.
