Water Main That Broke on Ali‘i Drive Part of Older Infrastructure; Sewage Spill Unrelated By Nathan Christophel

According to a spokesman for the county Department of Water Supply, the water main that broke shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday, June 12, closing a portion of Ali‘i Drive in Kona, is part of older infrastructure that can be subject to intermittent failure.

And the county Department of Environmental Management reported Monday, June 13, that a sewage spill reported shortly after was in a completely different location and was a separate event.

Police Investigating 3 Motorcycle Crashes in 3 Hours That Left 1 Dead, 2 Seriously Injured

Hawai‘i Island police are investigating three motorcycle collisions that occurred around the island this morning, Monday, June 13, within a three-hour time span. One motorcyclist was killed and the two other motorcyclists were seriously injured as a result of the collisions.

The first collision, involving a motorcycle and a Honda sedan, occurred about 7:26 a.m., Monday, June 13, 2022, on Māmalahoa Highway, (Highway 19), near the intersection of Hau Street, just north of Hilo.

Judge Grants Request for Examination of Fitness for Kona Man accused of Murdering 2 Houseless Men By Tiffany DeMasters

A Kona District Court judge granted the defense’s request to suspend court proceedings in order to conduct an examination of fitness for a Kona man accused of killing two houseless men and assaulting two other houseless individuals in Hilo.

Twenty-four-year-old Chito Asuncion appeared in plain clothes before Per Diem Judge Joseph P. Florendo Monday afternoon on charges of first-degree murder, which applies when an individual murders more than one person; two counts of second-degree murder; and two counts of second-degree attempted murder.

DWS: 2 Wells Out Now Same Ones in 2017 By Tom Hasslinger

The Department of Water Supply stated Monday, June 13 that two of the four inoperable wells necessitating a 25% water restriction in North Kona are the same wells that failed in 2017, which prompted a water restriction in Kona that last over a year.

Both the Kalaoa and the Hualālai deepwells were part of the situation in 2017 and are out of order now, the department said. Neither recently repaired well was still under its warranty period, either.

Police Seek Missing Teen

Big Island police are asking for the public’s help with finding a missing teen.

The Hawaiʻi Police Department said Monday, June 13, that 15-year-old Ricky Ramirez was reported as a runaway. He was last seen June 9 in the Hawaiian Paradise Park area, wearing a black and white shirt, black pants, white shoes and a black and white backpack. He could be frequenting the Pāhoa and Kea‘au areas.
