DIG DEEPER: Read, Investigate, Discover

On Monday, June 20th, we embark on our 2022 Summer Learning journey together with the theme: DIG DEEPER: Read, Investigate, Discover.  There's nothing librarians love more than sparking an interest or introducing a new learning tool and watching our patrons delve deeper and discover new passions.  Lifelong learning begins at the library, and this summer, we are the place for all ages to read, investigate and discover.

In our last newsletter, I explained the role of gnomes in our summer explorations, but this email contains the promised details of our summer plans.  The library staff presented me with a long list of program ideas and boundless enthusiasm, and even with holding them back just a bit to keep it sustainable, they have outdone themselves in planning a great variety of learning activities for all ages, babies through adults.

Library programs are funded almost exclusively from grants and donations.  Statistics do play a significant role in our funding opportunities, so thank you in advance for your willingness to note your presence at our self-directed learning stations, allow photos, and fill out evaluation forms at the end of each program.  Feedback is essential for us to share your experiences with our funders, and it helps us to provide you with the best learning environment. We read every single evaluation form, and some of our best ideas have come from you.

We are looking forward to a great summer!

Be well.  Be safe.  Be kind.
Please feel free to contact me any time at jperrin@jaffreypubliclibrary.org.
Kind regards, Julie M. Perrin, Library Director - a.k.a. Ms. Julie

Farm Fresh Checkout

Our local growers have kept the community in rhubarb recently, but we are looking forward to additional fresh produce coming soon!
A big thank you to Tracie's Community Farm, Foggy Hill Farm, Maplewater Farm and the Jaffrey Food Pantry for supporting this program.
An extra loud shout-out to Tracie's for also sharing an abundance of vegetable plants, for free, to our community, in addition to weekly CSA deliveries of fresh produce.

Are you new to Farm Fresh Checkout?  Farm Fresh Checkout is one of our food literacy programs, designed to introduce and provide fresh produce to the community.  "Why check out just a book, when you can check out a book AND a tomato?"  Our local farmers gift the community with produce to introduce you to new varieties and food opportunities you might not otherwise have available.  All are welcome to partake.  It is truly a gift for all.  We also have great cookbooks, and special recipes on our AtoZ Food America and World Food databases so you can figure out how best to prepare that kohlrabi or rutabaga that may be new to your dinner table.
Just come into the library, see what's in the fridge by the service desk, take it home and enjoy!

Wednesday, July 27 at 10:30 am

Thanks to a grant from the Children's Literacy Foundation (CLiF), we invite Summer Learning families to this special storytelling and book giveaway event with a children’s author. Following the storytelling, CLiF will treat each child to two books to take home for their personal libraries. The event will be held on the Library Lawn, so bring a blanket and sunblock. Please indicate ages of children when registering.  Registration is required so that CLiF sends us enough books.

Gnomes, Literacy & Community
Our Adopt-a-Gnome program, born of an idea from one patron, has taken on a life of its own.  We now have dozens of gnomes of all shapes & sizes, including ones created from literary characters and made just for the library by our talented community.  Even our youngest patrons are bringing in gnomes to join the fun.
And of course, to adopt a gnome at the end of summer, you must be participating in the Summer Learning program and practice your reading and writing skills by filling out a gnome adoption application.
Be sure to check out our Gnome Reads next time you visit, and don't be surprised to see gnomes in unexpected places...

Book Bike Deliveries

Reserve your Bike stop by Saturday at 12:30 pm to be on the following week's dropoff schedule.
Ms. Andrea rides on Mondays and Ms. Bailey rides on Tuesdays, delivering books for outreach programs, as well as to neighborhoods and special requests along the way.
Reserve books in advance and schedule a drop-off right to your front door. Call the library and ask to speak to Ms. Bailey, our Book Bike Manager, to check our delivery route to see if your neighborhood is included and get on our schedule. This program is weather and staff dependent. You do not need to be homebound for this service.
