Theodore Roosevelt: Amateur Historian
North Dakota History, Vol. 25, No. 1, January 1958

In this article, historian Elwyn B. Robinson delves into the writings of Theodore Roosevelt, his philosophy of history writing, the conditions by which he wrote, and many of his publications.

During his lifetime, Roosevelt authored 47 books and 32 articles. He was a vocal advocate of making history more accessible and relatable to a general audience. The beloved former president himself was an avid reader, a prolific writer, and a history maker. Robinson writes, "By deepening his own understanding of American history he was preparing himself for national leadership."

Learn the History of North Dakota’s Ukrainian Immigrants

Properties nominated to the National Register of Historic Places require rigorous documentation to convey their historical significance. One of the documents that helps establish significance is the historical context document, which includes a thorough background and history of a property type or properties with a shared background. The 1987 historical context document Ukrainian Immigrant Dwellings and Churches in North Dakota from Early Settlement Until the Depression features a detailed history of Ukrainian immigration to North Dakota from 1896 to1960, including pre-immigration conditions in Ukraine.

Little Kids, Big World is a Fun Introduction to History

Introducing youngsters to history is fun when educator/gallery guide Sarah Fox is at the helm. This month, toddlers and preschoolers will make a rocket, dig for dinosaurs, create a bubble wand to blow bubbles like Lawrence Welk, and read inside a tipi. Let's get learning!

The Sitting Bull Robe Saga: Exploring the Lifecycle of an International Loan During a Pandemic

Museums loan objects to other museums. Most of the loans are in state and straightforward. But when an international border and a pandemic are involved, things can get a little, shall we say, interesting. In 2018, an art gallery in Canada requested the loan of a significant piece of history: a buffalo robe painted by Hunkpapa Lakota leader Sitting Bull. The loan was approved with an end date set for May 30, 2020. And then the COVID-19 pandemic happened.
