<<First Name>>, would you like Dublin to become a wonderful city in which to cycle? That’s what we’re working to achieve. We’re all volunteers and we need more members to strengthen our voice and help fund our efforts.

New Dublin Cycling Campaign Chairperson

Kevin Baker has stepped down as Chair of Dublin Cycling Campaign. Kevin has been Chairperson for two and a half years. The Executive of the Campaign would like to thank him for his valuable contribution and leadership over that time. Kevin was instrumental in changing the focus of the Campaign from advocacy for cycling to  advocacy for Active Travel and Liveable Cities. He also provided significant leadership in the efforts to restructure the organisation to make the Dublin Cycling Campaign more effective as a 21st century charity. We are especially grateful to Kevin for the huge amount of work he put into the Campaign’s response to the BusConnects consultations, and we look forward to improved infrastructure for people cycling in the future as a result of that effort.

Ellen Cullen has taken over as Chair. She has been Vice-Chair of Dublin Cycling Campaign since 2020, and is particularly interested in the facilitation of independent/active transport for children, people with disabilities, older people and people who feel active travel “isn’t for people like them” to make our city truly inclusive and liveable.

Our new Vice-Chair is Joan O’Connell, who has been on the Dublin Cycling Campaign’s Executive Committee since 2020. Her interests include the work of Ingrid Gehl and the idea of people-centred public realm, together with inclusive, human rights-based, intersectional feminist perspectives.

Note that elections to the roles of Chair and Vice-Chair of Dublin Cycling Campaign, plus the other positions on our Executive Committee, will take place as normal at the next DCC Annual Members' Meeting. This will take place in the autumn - dates still be decided.

Family Fun Cycle on the DLR Connector Route

The DLR Connector Route is planned to be a safer route from Nutgrove Shopping Centre to Monkstown. To test out the first leg of the route, a group of DLR and Dublin Cycling Campaign members organised a Family Fun Cycle on Bank Holiday Monday, May 2nd. With the support of some very helpful DCC marshals and the Gardaí, almost 160 people of all ages on all sorts of cycles enjoyed a most enjoyable afternoon, ending with iced lollies for everyone at Loreto Park.

News from the European Cyclists' Federation (ECF)

Led by Belgium and including Ireland, six EU countries signed a European Bicycle Declaration on World Bicycle Day 2022, calling on the European Commission to develop a “proper action plan at the EU level” to prioritise cycling. One of biggest events on cycling advocates’ calendars is the Velo-city conference and this year it is taking place in Ljubliana. Campaigners from Ireland have been attending Velo-city since the 1990s, and it has helped forge stronger connections between campaigners across Europe. Five advocates from Cyclist.ie and its groups will be attending the conference, some of whom will be delivering papers. All going well, Dublin Cycling Campaign and Cyclist.ie will host a special meeting after the summer at which we will disseminate the best ideas that our delegates encountered. Watch this space.
