Ordinations, Appointments, and Approvals

On Saturday, June 4, The Rev. Deacon Garrett Ayers was ordained to the Sacred order of Deacons (transitional) at Trinity Cathedral in Columbia and will serve as Deacon at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Columbia (Shandon).
 
On Thursday, June 9, The Rev. Fergie Horvath was ordained to the Sacred Order of Priests at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, Spartanburg, and will serve as Rector of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Greer.  
 
Summary of actions taken at the June 11 meeting of the Diocesan Executive Council:
  • DEC approved the funding for the renovation and refurnishing of Diocesan House which will begin in July and should be completed by the end of August.
  • DEC recognized The Venerable Dorothy (d’Rue) Hazel for her service as diocesan liaison to DEC and the Standing Committee for the past two decades and thanked her for her service. The Bishop has assigned The Rev. Canon Stephen J. Rhoades as the new diocesan liaison to DEC and Standing Committee.
 
Summary of actions taken at the June 11 meeting of the Standing Committee:
  • The Standing Committee approved the Candidacy of Mr. Mitchell Felton for Holy Orders (Priesthood) and recommended his Candidacy to the Bishop.
  • The Standing Committee approved the Candidacy of Mr. Christopher Johnson for Holy Orders (Priesthood) and recommended his Candidacy to the Bishop.
  • The Standing Committee consented to the following Episcopal elections:
    • The Rev. Canon Shannon Rogers Duckworth as Bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana
    • The Very Rev. Dr. Douglas Scharf as Bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida
    • The Rev. Phyllis Spiegel as Bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of Utah
    • The Reverend Jos Tharakan as Bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of Idaho
  • The Standing Committee also approved continued funding for basic maintenance and liability insurance for the buildings and real property known as The Episcopal Church Home at York Place (ECHYP).
 
On June 14, Bishop Richards appointed The Rev. Mitch Smith as the Acting Dean of the Midlands Convocation and The Rev. Amanda Robertson as Acting Dean of the Catawba Convocation to serve until the next Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina at which time an election shall take place.
