Welcome to the Cool Boulder
campaign newsletter!

Dear <<First Name>>,

First of all, welcome! Second, deep apologies to those of you who have been waiting an extended period of time to hear from us. This initiative is growing organically and we are adding capacity as quickly as we can. This is our first newsletter, although you may also see Cool Boulder news coming from the Climate Initiatives department of the City of Boulder or any one of our partner organizations. There are now over 25  organizations that have formally partnered with the Cool Boulder campaign, and we welcome new partners all the time—email info@coolboulder.org to begin the conversation.

We will be highlighting different themes within the field of Natural Climate Solutions each month starting this month with TREES! After a quick break in July we'll pick up in August with POLLINATORS. In September we will talk about WATER. And in October we'll learn about seeds and other methods of propagating locally resilient plant species. Please check out the newly added Resources section of the Cool Boulder website where we're talking about trees—which ones to plant in our changing climate, how to water during our ongoing drought, etc.

+ Action: Join Our Community Scientist Heat Mapping Crew

Speaking of trees, how can our community plant them in places that cool our town where it's most needed? On what a NOAA meteorologist will tell us is likely to be the hottest day of the year—probably between July 6 and 24th—we will mobilize 100+ community volunteers to gather valuable data from a wide variety of different locations around Boulder. We will use this information, along with data from a network of 50+ stationary temperature sensors we have now deployed through assistance from CU graduate students Megan Hayden and Rebecca McHugh, to develop strategies for reducing urban heat extremes and protecting our most vulnerable people and places. If you are interested in the urban heat mapping volunteer opportunity, now is the time to sign up.

+ Passionate About Pollinators?

Chief Pollinator Advocate at the Corredor de las Plantas, Andrea Montoya, calls bumblebees the "gateway bug" to her pollinator obsession. Watch the Cool Boulder Calendar (which is just getting populated) for numerous upcoming opportunities to participate in pollinator garden planting and care as a Friend of Pollinators. And if you know of an event we should add to the calendar, please email it to info@coolboulder.org.
