Our Team is Growing!

Michael Mouton

Michael Mouton will serve as GEC's Communications Director. Michael is a strategic communications professional with over a decade of experience working on Capitol Hill, serving as a strategic communications consultant, and leading the communications shop of a DC-based civil rights advocacy nonprofit. A lifelong advocate for racial and social justice, Michael’s career choices and the passion he brings to his work are informed by his lived experiences, encounters, and his family’s history with racial inequity. Michael graduated from Cornell University in 2010 with a B.A. and double major in Government and Sociology.

Colton Schroer

Additionally, we have promoted Colter Schroer from part-time Research Assistant to full-time Policy Analyst. They recently completed their M.S. in Energy and Environment and received a B.A. in Environmental Analysis and Policy from Boston University. At BU, Colter supported research on environmental justice issues in the Texas Blackouts of 2021; looked at standards for forest carbon offsets in U.S. markets; and trained remote sensing models for NASA’s MEaSUREs project. Colter is also passionate about finding equitable and just ways to support efforts combatting the defining environmental problems of our era. At GEC, they research and develop well-informed, justice-minded nuclear policies to accelerate decarbonization efforts.

COMING UP (6/21): NICE Future Takes Up "Just Transitions"

Jessica is moderating a webinar on Transition Equities in the nuclear industry. This webinar is the third in a three-part series hosted by the University of Michigan’s Fastest Path to Zero Initiative in support of the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) Nuclear Innovation: Clean Energy Future (NICE Future) initiative’s new RISE3 campaign on researching the impacts on social equity and economic empowerment.

Specifically, the webinar will focus on interest in new nuclear projects in underserved communities, consideration of how to bring about a just transition and mitigate disproportionate impacts in the shift toward clean energy, and the outlook for increased diversity in the nuclear energy sector.

It's Conference Season!

It's a busy month of nuclear conferences.  We're speaking with engineers, industry leaders, and policymakers about our understanding of the policy and engagement changes necessary for new nuclear ventures to succeed in the U.S. Next week, Jackie will share the results of internal and external polling on public sentiment on nuclear and suggest ways the industry can garner communities' trust at the Nuclear Energy Assembly in Washington, D.C. She'll also speak at this year's Breakthrough Dialogue in California on a panel exploring the continued policy, regulatory, and social obstacles to the build-out of advanced nuclear.

KQED Forum: Should California Keep Generating Nuclear Power?

This month, Jessica joined fellow guests Ethan Elkind and Sammy Roth on the KQED Forum podcast to discuss whether California should continue investing in and expanding nuclear power in the state—including the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant.

What We're Reading...

Dianne Feinstein: Keep CA's Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant Open (Sacramento Bee)

By Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). "California has some of the most ambitious clean-energy goals in the world, including decreasing carbon emissions to 40% below 1990 levels by 2030 and achieving 100% clean electricity by 2045. That will require energy alternatives that can provide power around the clock in addition to solar and wind. Shutting down the state’s single largest power producer under these circumstances would make little sense."

A Secret City With a Secret African American History (New York Times)

By Casey Quackenbush. "There is a version of nuclear history, Dr. Wellerstein said, 'that’s warped by both secrecy and the sort of prejudices and priorities' of the white male officials at the top. That history erases the vital contributions of the African American workers."

How Liberals Created, Then Destroyed, Publicly Owned Nuclear Power (Jacobin)

By Fred Stafford. "The battle over New York’s Indian Point power plant was quietly a battle for the soul of American liberalism."
