Learn how to Preserve Harbord Village’s Trees
Arborist Todd Irvine gave a rousing presentation at the HVRA Spring General Meeting.  Viewers learned about how to care for tree roots, fertilize, and prune responsibly. With the recent tree carnage from the wind “derecho” in May, this info is very timely! Todd’s information is useful for everyone regardless of gardening experience, and can be applied to both smaller trees as well as bigger ones on city property.  You can access the video here.

Bloor Borden Farmers’ Market is Back - and you can help!
You can find great local produce every Wednesday from 3-7pm in the Green P parking lot on the SW corner of Bloor and Borden Streets. They have a lot of returning vendors and a few new ones.

Help promote this great neighbourhood resource!  Lawn signs are the only advertising the market does. Do you have somewhere you can display a sign? If you have one from last year, please put it back out and let the Market folks know using this link. If you would like a new one, please fill out the request form here.

Jumping Worms Are No Joke
In May, the HVRA Gardeners hosted an informative webinar on the threat of jumping worms. Local expert Dr. Michael McTavish provided helpful ways to come to terms with this new invasive species. His presentation is now online here

As these worms can have a serious impact on our ecosystems, Michael indicated that  we can and should slow their spread. He referred viewers to the website of the Invasive Species Centre for more information about jumping worms, including practical advice for recognizing the worms and disposing of them.

Ongoing research requires and values observations from local gardeners. The worms are visible by July or August. If you find suspected jumping worms in your garden or in public places, please report the sightings and send images or videos to EDDmapS (Early Detection and Distribution Mapping System).

One of Lydia Wong’s bee hotels. Richard Longley writes: “Grass not cut until the end of No Mow May to encourage biodiversity in lawns. No Mow May is cousin to No Rake Fall, which has the same purpose. Good to know that sloth can have benefits for nature!”

Good Neighbours Making a Great Neighbourhood

Community Events in Pictures

HVRA hosted an in person spring clean-up this past April 30.  Folks gathered in Margaret Fairley park to pick up supplies and raffle tickets, scoured the alleys and side streets of HV, then reassembled in the park for snacks and prizes.  Many thanks to NW Area Rep Kerry Clare for organizing (and to her husband Stuart -pictured below with Treasurer Lena Mortensen - for stepping in on the big day when Kerry fell ill); to Wright Real Estate and the the Harbord BIA for sponsoring prizes; to the Harbord Bakery for the snacks; and of course to all the many wonderful volunteers who came out to beautify the neighbourhood!

HVRA was thrilled to help the Harbord BIA to run its first Spring Artisan Studio Tour on June 4. Between the many galleries, studios, cafes, shops, live music, student art show, and chalk drawing, community members were able to enjoy the many delights Harbord St has to offer. Many thanks to all the volunteers, BIA members and of course Neil Wright for creating the first of what we hope is many wonderful  street events to come.
