Celebrate, Educate, & Inspire at the Ann Arbor NAACP's 28th Annual Juneteenth Celebration

Juneteenth – marking the day in 1865 that news of the the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached enslaved people in Texas – is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S.

At the county level, Washtenaw Dems have made a commitment to be inclusive and present in diverse communities. One way we’re doing that is by locating the WCDP Office in downtown Ypsilanti. We support civic organizations, including donating $1,000 to the annual NAACP Student Scholarship Fund.  WCDP also lobbied for Judge Kidge Miriam Perry, one of first African American judges appointed to the bench in many years.

“Major efforts have been made to recruit and support candidates and elected officials of color, such as Sheriff Jerry Clayton and Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Victoria Burton-Harris,” added WCDP Executive Board Member Mary Hall-Thiam.
  • Join the festivities at Ypsilanti’s 2nd Annual Juneteenth Celebration this Friday, June 17 at 8 pm. thru Sunday, June 19 at 5 p.m.  Events at the Freighthouse & in the parking lot behind Puffer Reds.  Official parking at 301 W. Michigan Ave.
  • Catch the Ann Arbor NAACP's joyful celebration on Saturday, June 18,  starting in in Fuller Park at 10 a.m., followed by the Community Unity March to Wheeler Park, where celebrations will run from noon to 6 p.m. Children's activities, food, vendors, entertainment, and more!

We're in the home stretch - don't stop now!

Freedom

Freedom to vote.  Freedom to choose our own representatives.  Freedom to decide if and when to have kids.

From Monroe to Menominee, all Michiganders believe in freedom. The 2022 election is all about defending those freedoms.  And that's a story we can tell that is both true and builds on our shared values

Come learn how to inpspire people to vote, how to put the right on their heels, and how to how to break through the noise in 2022.  Come learn how to win.

UMHS nurses demand fair wages, staffing

Wear a red shirt and come out to support the MNA-UMPNC nurses as they protest UM Regents for being forced to work short-staffed, putting profits before patients. The University of Michigan Professional Nurse Council (UMPNC) and Michigan Medicine have been in contract negotiations since March 15 and the current contract expires June 30.

Over 5,000 university employed nursing staff are represented by the UMPNC and, like hospitals across the country, Michigan Medicine nurses have been understaffed, underpaid, overworked and emotionally devastated during the pandemic. In Michigan, 36,538 people have died of the disease. Michigan Medicine reports that over 6,300 employees have tested positive during the pandemic, and nearly 6,000 COVID patients have been cared for and discharged to date.
