Fire Damages Eastside Home in Elgin

600 Block of Raymond

Elgin, IL – On Tuesday, June 14, 2022, just before 830 p.m., members of the Elgin Fire Department responded to the 600 hundred block of Raymond St. for the report of a possible structure fire.
 
Responding fire companies arrived within 4 minutes of dispatch and found smoke coming from a first floor room through an exterior door. Crews made entry and found moderate smoke conditions however the majority of the fire had been extinguished prior to their arrival. The remaining fire was extinguished within 5 minutes of arrival limiting the damage from the fire to the room of origin.  Damage from the fire was estimated at approximately $10,000.
 
There were no civilian or firefighter injuries due to the fire and tenants were able to reoccupy the structure once the smoke was removed by crews on scene. Initial indications show the fire may have been caused by electrical issues. The Elgin Fire Department Fire Investigation Team is investigating.

A Tip from Chief Cagann:

Extension cords are intended for temporary use and should never be used to power large appliances such as air conditioners, clothes dryers, or refrigerators. Large appliances such as these require too much electricity for extension cords to safely deliver creating a potential fire hazard.
