Policy and Governance
- The Union Agriculture Minister has said the government is making concerted efforts to include agriculture as part of the school curriculum. The minister said that this is in line with the NEP 2020, which recommends balancing theory with practical knowledge.
- Schools reopened in Maharashtra today and the Education Minister has said the focus will be on bringing out-of-school children back into the education system. According to State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) data, a total of 25,204 children are out of school. SCERT has designed special bridge courses to help these children recover from their learning loss.
- The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) issued summons to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner regarding the safety and security in MCD schools. The commission instituted an enquiry on the condition of safety and security of girls in primary schools in Delhi, after visits to 4 primary schools in May, 2022, found toilets to be locked and no CCTV in some schools.
- The Chhattisgarh government has decided to reopen as many as 260 state-run schools in four districts of the Maoist-hit Bastar region that were shut down 15 years ago due to insurgency in the region. The district collectors have been asked to ensure admission to the maximum extent possible and regular attendance of children in primary and pre-primary classes.
- The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has launched a scholarship scheme to enable Scheduled Castes (SC) students to study in CBSE-affiliated residential schools. The scholarships will be given to about 3,000 students every year, and will cover the school fees and hostel charges till the students complete Class 12.
- The Union Ministry of Education has laid out a plan for the nationwide replication of the Gujarat Education Department’s Vidya Sameeksha Kendra (VSK) and every state is ready to implement it from 2022-23, according to a senior official. The VSK helps track daily online attendance of teachers and students, undertake centralized summative and periodic assessments of learning outcomes of students.

Schools
- The West Bengal government has extended the summer vacation in schools, other than the ones in the hill districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, by 11 more days citing extreme heatwave conditions. Schools, except the ones in the hill districts, can now reopen only after June 26. Several private schools, however, have said they would stick to their decision to resume in-person classes this week.
- The Department of Basic Education (DoBE), Uttar Pradesh, has directed government primary and upper primary schools in Noida to focus on sporting activities. For this, these schools have been given Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively, for the purchase of sporting equipment.
