Seasonal Snap

Report from the Playing Field Management Committee (PFMC)

Thanks to everyone who has posted such positive comments on the Facebook page – it’s great to know that people are using and appreciating the playpark, and the playing field in general.  To further enhance the area, we have ordered a gazebo-type structure which will be used to provide a sheltered seating area in the playpark and by visiting groups for an outside classroom/meeting type space.

The potholes along Ketton Drift, from the start at Westfields as far as the parking area, have been filled but we would again ask all drivers to please give way to pedestrians and cyclists, and to drive carefully along that stretch.  Indeed, please consider residents when driving through the village.

Wild Woodland Way.
As mentioned last time, we are drawing up plans for the next phase of this lovely area although we cannot start on most of that work until early autumn.  In the meantime, it’s still a lovely, quiet spot where you can just walk, sit and relax.  New trees near there are doing well. It is hoped the new seating area will be used by children and groups visiting to investigate bugs and other wildlife seen in the woods. This is being funded by a recent successful North Northamptonshire Council Community Funding scheme grant application for the new Woodland area.

More grants
The three main users of the playing field (the Cricket Club, Wittering Premiair, and Macca Sports) have committed to working together to access possible grants from Sport England.  Cllr. Sam Cherry is spear-heading the application process.  For the benefit of all users, the Parish Council is making an application for a grant towards a power supply to be installed in the pavilion.

Please keep all dogs out of the play area!
The North Northamptonshire Council has advised that when a park is fenced off and gated, it automatically attracts a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO).  This means that dogs are not allowed in this area and the ban is enforceable.  Please can all residents ensure dogs are kept out of the area to protect children and adults from harm.

Caretaker role.
At the time of writing, the closing date has ended for applications and there has been one application.  An interview date is being arranged and hopefully an appointment will be made soon.

Work going on.
As mentioned above, a new gazebo will be installed soon with some seating inside and some new bench seats assembled and installed too.  A new bin will go in near the Deeps/Woodland entrance and to replace the broken one. A new pedestrian gate will be installed near the maintenance gate and one put in to fill the gap and other slats mended. If you have any more suggestions, please do let the PFMC or the Clerk know at suggestions@eastononthehill-pc.gov.uk

We are still on the lookout for more people to join this committee – if you think you’d like to, or just want to know a bit more about what’s involved, please contact the Parish Clerk, Jenny Rice, on email clerk@eastononthehill-pc.gov.uk or tel. 07889669550. The next meeting is on 2/8/22 at 8pm in the Village Hall.

Easton on the Hill Parish Council

Are you tired of dangerous, speeding traffic on the A43?
The Parish Council would like to start a  Community Speedwatch scheme in the village.  This requires volunteers to come forward to be part of the scheme – be trained and be part of monitoring sessions each week so have a few hours available to make it successful.  The more volunteers, the less commitment for everyone. There may be a chance to join forces with Collyweston but I am waiting to hear back on this.  Please get in touch if you are interested and/or want to know more please email clerk@eastononthehill-pc.gov.uk

Spring clean 9/7/22 10am
The Parish Council Trees and Greens Group are organising a village/Spring Close spring clean and litter pick on Saturday 9/7/22 from 10am.  If you are interested in helping, please do get in touch by emailing chloe.green@eastononthehill-pc.gov.uk

Allotments
This time of year, the allotments look splendid and full of life and produce.  Well done all plot holders for keeping your plot well. Please be reminded that dogs are not allowed in the allotment area unless they are on a lead and that all paths and borders around your allotment are kept nicely trimmed.  All plots should be well cultivated and not affecting others. Also, please remember to keep the gates shut. Thank you.  Please see Patsy Bates for any queries.

Village signs/traffic/parking
After a meeting with Highways, it has been agreed to put new white lines around the entrance to the Café, black out the old school lines as these are not relevant now and people can park there and install smart, new signs around the village pointing to the various facilities in the village.

Jenny Rice, Clerk. Tel 07889669550.

Next Parish Council meeting is Monday 11th July at 7pm in the village hall.  All welcome.
Agendas and minutes are posted in the bus shelter notice board and on the website.

Comedy Night

There is a lot going on at the Village Hall and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Would you like to give something back to our community and get involved in running our lovely Village Hall?

We are looking for two new Trustees to join our management committee.  We meet about six times a year and are responsible for the day to day management of the village hall charity.  Some of us take on additional responsibilities that are not onerous but allow us to work together and make decisions in the best interest of the village and the hall.
We are looking for someone to become a trustee and take on the role of Treasurer.  The majority of the work is online and involves preparing the annual accounts, managing the Hall’s bank account, reconciling invoices and making any payments.  The current Treasurer is very willing to do a handover.
For the other trustee position we would like someone to take on some of the event coordination for hall managed activities like our workshops, this would involve liaising with the providers, set up on the day and helping with refreshments.  We aim to run approx. 8 - 10 of our own events each year.

We would love to hear from you and welcome some new trustees to our team.  If you are interested or would like to know more then please email Chris Briers on chris@eothvillagehall.co.uk

The Open Gardens Day is on Sunday 26th June

All proceeds raised from the open gardens and tea room located at the village hall will be divided  equally between the Village Hall and Horticultural Society.

Curate on the Hill

This time of year is always a bit unusual in the church year. The Easter celebrations are over, Pentecost has come and gone, and we enter a period known as ‘ordinary time’. Following all the celebrations for the Jubilee, I am looking forward to a season of quiet and relaxing routine. I know that this will not be the case but, in my mind, there is a relaxing factor that comes with the summer months. Simple church services, weddings, baptisms, warmer weather, etc.

In the current climate of fear, suspicion, and recovery from Covid we must remember that the concept of relaxation is far from some people’s minds. As a church, locally and nationally, there is a move to become a focal point for peace and support. I hope that everyone can see the church in this way, but I know that this is not the case. Mistakes of the past haunt the reputation of the church. Perceptions of exclusion and judgement is still in the minds of those who do not engage with church. I really do understand why this is the case. My hope is that the whole church congregation can help challenge this view and simply show love, care, and acceptance.

I have teamed up with a charity called Safe Families. We are probably all aware that families who are struggling can be isolated, stressful, and negative environments. It seems that unless you are in absolute crisis, social services and other support providers do not offer any support. During my time as a teacher, I was only too aware of the JAM families (just about managing) and often they need a little support and guidance to make things significantly better. Safe Families offers a support network to give this little bit of extra help. In our communities I have seen people very willing to help their ‘neighbour’ with little things like a regular chat, mowing a lawn, popping to the shop etc. This is the basis of strong community, and this is what Safe families does. If you are interested in getting involved there is a launch event in Easton on the Hill village hall on Tuesday 27th September. There will be some information and the opportunity to sign up as a volunteer. This can be as a family friend, resource friend or even as a host family. More information can be found at safefamilies.uk

Paws for Thought

The Theological Education of Rectory Puppy

Looking forward to our Summer holiday, the Dogs have had the opportunity to remind themselves of what beach weather might be. Jesse is ever excited about learning new things. And Lexie is still very tolerent of Jesse’s ‘enthusiasm’
But Jesse’s theological training continues under the masterful tutelage of an elderly, wise and educated Yellow Labrador, Lexie

Jesse: I love the hotter weather.
Lexie: So do I, but sometimes I find ait a bit too hot
Jesse: but you can always jump into the sea
Lexie: but we don’t live near the sea
Jesse: yes but any water will do
Lexie: I suppose
Jesse: especially those really muddy and smelly ditches
Lexie: hmmmm, Rev Keir doesn’t like us going in there
Jesse: I know, but it is such fun and very cooling
Lexie: At least we are able to shed out winter coat.
Jesse: Is that why so much hair is everywhere in the house
Lexie: yes, they try and clear it up but we just keep shedding
Jesse: Cool, can we choose a different colour for our summer coat?
Lexie: No, it just grows through the same
Jesse: but I wanted to go all rainbow colours, that would be awesome
Lexie: people might look at you a bit funny
Jesse: I don’t care, Rev Keir is always saying that you are loved just for being you
Lexie: That is right, but a rainbow puppy would be something quite unusual
Jesse: People colour their hair, I saw a woman who had a wonderful rainbow hairstyle
Lexie: Yes, but she was going to Oxford Pride.
Jesse: So I cannot go all rainbow colours unless I go to Oxford?
Lexie: No, Pride is a time when people celebrate who they are, particularly the LGBTQA+ community
Jesse: But I am proud of who I am
Lexie: Yes but some people find it hard to celebrate who they are
Jesse: why is that?
Lexie: Well society can put pressure on people to be like others. Which can make people feel like they don’t fit in
Jesse: That is really sad, we should celebrate everyone for who they are.
Lexie: Exactly, especially what you know that 68% of LGBTQA+ teenagers have had suicidal thoughts as opposed to 28% of straight teens
Jesse: That is awful, and the way to beat this is to have a big party with rainbow colours
Lexie: Not just that but it is important to recognise the importance of Pride
Jesse: Right, that does it, I am going to dye my hair rainbow
Lexie: Lovely gesture but I am not sure dye will take to your black fur……
History Group

Our talks will resume in September after our summer break.

However, please keep in touch and we need your village tales and historical knowledge.

Here is a question for you: When was the pond made in Spring Close and who was involved in building it?

Pet Show and Fete

Here we go again…
As I hope you all know the Fete and Pet Show are scheduled for Sunday 28th August, the day after the Car and Bike Show, at the Bell, the fete having been moved from May due to the Jubilee Celebrations.
There is a planning meeting on Monday July 18th at 19.00 in the Blue Bell to which all are invited, especially representatives of all village organisations and clubs.
We won’t have many more meetings, if any.
If anyone can help with Pet Show prize sponsorship, or help on the day please contact Sarah Gardner sarah_g_1994@hotmail.com

I’m open to volunteers to take on the role of Co-Ordinator, or at least work with me this year with a view to taking over part of the role of Gala Co-Ordinator next year. I’m particularly interested to hear of any volunteers who can help with publicity/PR etc.

Thanks
