Free Learning Programs Featured at Former Governors' Mansion State Historic Site

BISMARCK, N.D. – The public is invited to a free interactive learning series during July at the Former Governors' Mansion State Historic Site. Participants are introduced to North Dakota’s fascinating history through educational conversations and hands-on projects. All programs are 2-4 p.m. and are suitable for preschoolers and up. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Cookies and lemonade will be served.

July 5 The carriage house behind the mansion was used for horses and, eventually, cars. Learn more about its history, and join us for a stick horse race. 

July 12 Bird Feeder Crafting. A variety of birds inhabit the mansion grounds, including robins, crows, and even a woodpecker. Join us as we make birdfeeders to take home and attract your own feathery creatures.

July 19 Introduction to Weaving. Many governors’ wives who lived here knitted pretty and useful items. Try your hand at a simple weaving project.

July 26 Immigration. While many governors were born in the state, some came here from other countries. Join us as we learn more about immigration and take a look at some belongings from people who immigrated to North Dakota.

The Former Governors’ Mansion, located at 320 East Ave. B, Bismarck, is managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Admission is free. The mansion is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday-Sunday, 12-4 p.m. Additional upcoming educational programs sponsored by the State Historical Society of North Dakota can be found at history.nd.gov/events.
