Though the days are finally getting shorter, the afternoons are only getting hotter, so come chill out with this edition of The Bradbury Beat!
While the cool winds of October Country often come to mind when we think of Ray Bradbury, he also wrote many stories invoking the summertime and its beach trips, ice cream treats, and the blazing hot sun.
Grab a bowl of your favorite ice cream and a couple of fun toppings (rainbow sprinkles are always a must for me), and come learn about Ray Bradbury's love for this sweet treat.

Take a lunch break and join the Ray Bradbury Center and fellow readers from around the globe for a lively discussion of a short story written by Ray Bradbury.
The Ray Bradbury Center will be be going live again on Thursday, July 28th at noon for another Feed Your Imagination Monthly Lunchtime Story Club!
Our short story for this sweltering summertime session is “The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit” from A Medicine for Melancholy.
And since we’re meeting at noon, feel free to have some lunch or a snack and most definitely an ice cream treat!

Wednesdays from 11am-2pm throughout the summer our team will be on hand to delight with wild stories, fun facts, and witty witticisms as we guide you through the out-of-this-world collection of artifacts and ephemera from the life and works of our fabulous Ray Bradbury.

Dirty Daddy: The Chronicles of a Family Man Turned Filthy Comedian, by Bob Saget
Bob Saget, America's most loved TV Dad, wrote this autobiography in 2014. He tells uncensored and heartfelt stories from his life in entertainment and beyond.
I enjoyed reading this book because I love Bob, and even though my image of him is that clean freak, loving father, in his book, he shows this other side of himself, his true self, with his comedic talent.

The Thing about Pam, Hulu TV Mini Series
This 6 episode mini-series based on a true story details the involvement of Pam Hupp (played very well by Renee Zellweger) in the 2011 murder of Betsy Faria.
My favorite part of this shocking story of greed and deception is that it is narrated by Dateline's Keith Morrison, and his voice just sets the mood for a good crime docudrama!

Deb Talan and Steve Tanner have the best harmonies and wrote the songs that are included in this amazing album. Their music is calming, catchy, and just plain awesome.
They remain independent and their original songs have appeared in movies, TV Shows, commercials and programming for PBS Kids. Everyone must go listen to this album!

Ray Bradbury’s close relationship to National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) yielded significant recognition and awards throughout his lifetime. It also brought a novelty familiar to school children and NASA tourists to this day—space age ice cream.
According to freelance science author, Thomas Crow, “NASA contracted the Whirlpool Corporation to figure out a way to store ice cream at room temperature…Whirlpool engineers invented a way to remove the water from ice cream without melting it” Crow continues, “NASA spaceflight media release reported it included on Apollo 7. It was this release that ensured the specially freeze-dried ice cream would forever be called astronaut ice cream.”
Interestingly, in this same report we learn that, “The last surviving member of the Apollo 7 crew, Walter Cunningham, denied there was astronaut ice cream aboard the flight.”
Crow concludes by debunking the long-held astronaut ice cream myth by stating, “If it wasn’t aboard Apollo 7, astronaut ice cream has never been to space. No other flight has taken it. So astronaut ice cream isn’t really for astronauts.”

We have dozens more foreign editions heating up the shelves as well. Fahrenheit 451 has never been out of print, so these numbers are likely to grow!
