Montes

Colchagua Vallyey, Chile

Montes was established in 1988 by Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand, with the aim of producing the best wines in Chile from the best regions. Montes left the large producer he was making wine for in order to focus on premium quality wines. He and three friends used their own modest funds to start the venture, as they didn't want to be tied to corporate entities and their demands. Rather than focussing simplistically on the trends for Organic or Biodynamic production, Montes prefers to focus on sustainability in every aspect of their operations; working on biodiversity and community projects bringing their own rewards. Aurelio Montes' brave decision to leave a comfortable position to gamble on producing quality-driven wines clearly paid off. In 2020, his illustrious career was recognised in the form of the International Wine Challenge’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

This week, I tasted the latest releases of Montes' premium wines, Purple Angel, Montes 'M' and Folly, with Aurelio Montes Jnr. We tried the new 2019 vintage alongside a 2010 or 2011 example of each. Whilst the house style remains clearly defined, the newer wines have gained an appealing generosity and exuberance. The Montes philosophy remains simple: the less intervention in the winemaking process, the better. The wines are more approachable now, thanks to denser vine planting, a moderate increase in yields and a significant reduction in the amount of new oak. They'll still comfortably age a decade but it won't be essential to wait, as was the case with earlier, more robustly tannic vintages.

The 2019 Purple Angel and Folly are available now, whilst the 'M' is currently still the equally acclaimed 2018.

2019 Purple Angel

£255.00 per 6 Bot Case, in bond
£322.07 Duty & VAT paid

The lighter touch that has been apparent on this wine since 2016 has turned it from a red I admired into one that I actively want to drink. Made from Carmenère with 8% Petit Verdot, using fruit from Apalta and Marchigüe, this is a fine, detailed, focused Purple Angel with subtle 80% new wood, engaging freshness, lots of leafy perfume and thrilling palate length. 2023-2032

Consistently one of the best and most layered carmeneres from Chile and, indeed, the world. Intriguing Cuban cigar and roasted bay-leaf character to the blackcurrants, blackberries and exotic spices. Some sandalwood, black chocolate, cedar and baked red chili pepper, too. Full-bodied, creamy and voluptuous, but still fresh and juicy, with dried-leaf, dark-olive and finely ground cocoa-powder character. Dusty tannins and a long, refined finish. A blend of 92% carmenere from Apalta (46%) and Marchigue(46%) and 8% petit verdot from Apalta. Drink or hold.

The nose is redolent with dark fruits. Smoky black cherry and five spice are joined by aromas of the Garrigue. Fleshy and juicy, the vibrant palate is effortlessly unforced and harmonious. It's almost Pomerol-like, with its fine-grained tannins and long, floral scented finish. Now-2032+.

2018 Alpha 'M'

£225.00 per 6 Bot Case, in bond
£286.07 Duty & VAT paid

Reflecting a shift in style across the top of the Montes range towards less extraction and oak, this is a dense, serious, but well-balanced cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon with 20% Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Serious, ageworthy stuff, with polished tannins, well-handled 80% new barrels, pastille, mint and blackberry fruit and a stony, refreshing, satisfying finish.

Black fruit, dried herbs, spices and earthy undertones. Hints of bark and cedar, too. Full body with firm tannins that are fleshy in texture and provide excellent structure. Layered with a fruity core. Savoury and succulent finish. This needs time to come together and mellow a bit, but very serious.

With the 1996 vintage of Montes Alpha M, Aurelio Montes jolted the high-end Chilean wine scene into life. 2018 was another superb year for this Cabernet Sauvignon, which is topped off with Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot to achieve a sophisticated expression of blackberry, cherry, blackcurrant, graphite and oak alongside good structure, fine, juicy tannins and a finish of blackcurrant jam.

2019 Folly

£235.00 per 6 Bot Case, in bond
£298.07 Duty & VAT paid

Little by little, the amount of new oak on Folly is being reduced, to the benefit of the wine in my opinion, as are the power and ripeness of the fruit. Dense, plush, ripe and intense, it's still something of a statement red, but there's no denying the quality of the blackberry and garrigue flavours complemented by wood spices.

Bright and freshly aromatic. The palate is plus, dense, layered and textural. There's ripe red cherry and strawberry in abundance. Velvety tannins and excellent balance make for a wine that is sensual and seductive. There's a focussing saline streak to the long rosewater tinged finish. Now-2030+
