HEADLINES

Sent by the Lord of the Harvest

Rev. Robert Mohns, LCC's West Regional Pastor, reflects on how the life of a pastor or deacon, like all Christians, is one lived under the cross, bearing the ills that are common to all humanity—for all humanity is under the curse of sin.

Living Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church closes its doors

LIPTON, Sask. - The Gospel was proclaimed and the Sacraments administered here for 25 years. However, for several reasons it became obvious that it was no longer viable to continue. At a congregational meeting on March 14, 2021, it was decided, with heavy hearts, that it was necessary to begin working towards disbanding the congregation and selling the building.

COMMUNICATIONS

Director of Communications, here! Without any further delay... Lisa and I are thrilled to announce the new interns for the summer of 2022: Andrew Hayes and Erika Schroth-Gajdos!

These two interns will receive mentorship from both organizations, with opportunities to come together for group discussions, brainstorming, and to workshop ideas and projects in a collaborative environment. Initial discussion surrounding potential projects for the summer and areas of work took place during preliminary interviews with both Andrew and Erika. Based on the talents, skillsets, and ideas of our two interns, it was determined that Andrew will work primarily on projects for Lutheran Church–Canada, and Erika will work primarily on projects for Lutheran Laymen’s League of Canada, with areas of cross-over and collaboration.

Please remember in prayer our 2022 interns, Andrew and Erika, as well as their supervisors, Alex and Lisa, as they work together these next couple of months!

MEET OUR INTERNS

Andrew Hayes is a talented musician, working towards his Bachelor’s Degree in Music at Brock University (St. Catharines, ON) and currently serving as the organist for his home congregation, Resurrection Lutheran Church (St. Catharines, ON). Andrew is passionate about the Lutheran Church’s tradition of doctrinally-rich hymnody. Through this internship, Andrew is eager to further explore the bold Gospel proclamation through God’s gift of music—looking at new ways of supporting and equipping Lutheran Church–Canada congregations and beyond to better understand why Lutherans worship the way we do and on the timeless treasure that is the historic liturgy and Divine Service.

Erika Schroth-Gajdos has devoted much time and talent to supporting LCC-related organizations and groups, including our National Youth Gathering; and the East District Lutheran Young Adults (EDLYA). Erika has worked with various non-profit organizations in the area of Donor Relations & Development, always looking for new ways to build genuine relationships and to foster engagement, rallied around meaningful causes and opportunities. Erika is excited to build and expand these relationships with current and potential supporters of Lutheran Laymen’s League of Canada. She is excited to seek out new ways to foster a deeper sense of community surrounding LLLC projects and to learn from seasoned individuals in donor relations.

PRAYERS

Prayer for Ukraine:

Heavenly Father, God of all concord, it is Your gracious will that Your children on earth live together in harmony and peace.  Defeat the plans of all those who would stir up violence and strife, war, and bloodshed, and, according to Your will, end the current conflict that now rages in Ukraine. Protect those who are suffering and being displaced from their homes. Bring a restoration of calm and security, and heal the wounds that have been inflicted.

We especially commend to Your care and keeping our Lutheran Church–Canada missionary in Ukraine, Rev. Oleksiy Navrotskyy and his family; Bishop Alexander Yurchenko; and all the pastors and members of the congregations of the Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Churches in Ukraine. Preserve them from all harm and danger. Grant them an extra measure of Your Holy Spirit at this time that they would remain steadfast in the one true faith in Him who is Lord and Saviour of all. In the midst of this conflict, empower them to reach out to others with the precious Gospel of God’s peace and love in Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

NATIONAL LWML-Canada Sunday 2022
Called to Reflect the Light of Christ (based on 2 Corinthians 4:6). LWML-Canada sets aside the first Sunday in October as LWML-Canada Sunday. NATIONAL Tapestry Magazine Calls for Submissions
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Work is beginning on the Winter 2022 issue of Tapestry and submissions are invited. By faith you are so cemented to Christ that He and you are one person. Submissions should address how this impacts things like how we reconcile with one another, the way we face the future, how our time, our talents or our treasures are used, our ability to react with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience (Colossians 3:12), or our attitude toward those who are different from ourselves. You might also consider submitting something seasonal: an article, a craft with a spiritual purpose, a poem...

LUTHERAN FOUNDATION

Wills and Living Wills serve very different purposes. A Will, formally known as a Last Will and Testament, is used to outline the disbursement of your assets after death, the point in time it comes into effect. In contrast, a Living Will, which comes into effect while you are still living (hence its name), gives direction regarding end-of-life decisions if you are not able to make them yourself. Historically, a Living Will document was only used to state your wishes regarding on-going life support and resuscitation efforts to be used (respirator, feeding tube, CPR, etc.), if you were in the later stages of a terminal illness or in a permanent vegetative state. Today, instructions previously given in a living will have now been incorporated into every province’s broader healthcare directive, and for this reason, in most provinces the terms healthcare directive and living will are synonymous. While there is no consistency on naming of healthcare directives across provinces, without exception, substitute decision makers, healthcare workers, or family members must adhere to your wishes as outlined in such a healthcare directive, regardless of their own feelings. If you want your wishes known and followed, complete your provincial healthcare directive, available for download from the internet. While keeping in mind our Christian values, use this link to connect to provincial resources and other information. (Legislation regarding healthcare directives is different in every province.)

LECTIONARY SUMMARY FROM THE LCMS
3-year and 1-year Series available Here.

FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
(July 10, 2022)
Leviticus (18:1–5) 19:9–18
Colossians 1:1–14
Luke 10:25–37

Jesus Is Our Good Samaritan

The Law commands that “you shall love the Lord your God” with all your heart, soul, mind and strength (Luke 10:27), and that you shall “love your neighbor as yourself” (Lev. 19:18). Love fulfills the Law because love does no harm to the neighbor. Christ Jesus is the Good Samaritan, who with divine compassion saves you from all evil. He takes your sin and death upon Himself and bears these in His body to the cross. He binds up your wounds with the healing balm of His Gospel, and He brings you into His Church, where He takes care of you at His own expense (Luke 10:34–35). By such mercy, He proves “to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers” (Luke 10:36). Therefore, “you go, and do likewise” (Luke 10:37). By “your faith in Christ Jesus” and “because of the hope laid up for you in heaven” (Col. 1:4–5), you have the same love for others as the Lord Jesus has for you.
