In the July episode, Sharon and Ken will interview Kerry Palmer. This interview will include a discussion regarding his work as a keeper of circles and his approach to trauma informed practice.

Kerry Palmer is a Metis Citizen who has worked in the area of Dispute Resolution for the past 22 years. Kerry is a certified trainer with the International Institute of Restorative Practices in Family Group Conferencing.

He has worked with the Dispute Resolution office of BC for the past 15 years as a Child Protection Mediator. In this role he supported both the families and the Ministry of Children and Family.

Kerry is currently a faculty member with the Justice Institute of BC in both the Conflict Resolution Department and the Aboriginal Leadership Program in the Centre for Aboriginal Programs. Kerry is a member of the Mediate BC roster in Child Protection. He is also a mediator with the Provincial government of B.C.

Much of Kerry’s work outside of the Justice Institute of BC is supporting organizations both within and outside the province of BC. This work is in the form of delivering Conflict Resolution training, mediation, and facilitation services. Along with this Kerry has worked extensively with Indigenous communities and organizations. Here he has supported Chief and council and Band offices.

FMC has embarked on a mentorship program. We are now seeking experienced, advanced, certified mediators who will act as mentors for FMC Certification candidates.

Recorded webinars are always available on our online teachable platform.  Here are just a couple:

A Scholarly Review of Mediation Models with Dr. Desmond Ellis (1.5 hours)

There is great diversity in the field of family mediation today. The co-presence of a variety of family mediation models presents practicing family mediators with the choice of using one model - the one they were trained to use - or use contributions from more than one model. This webinar is designed to help practicing family mediators ground their choice in a comparison and evaluation of the following four influential models of mediation: INTEREST BASED, TRANSFORMATIVE, THERAPEUTIC, and INSIGHT.  Dr. Ellis provides an overview of each of these models, focusing on the “Heart of each Model” and “Noteworthy Concerns of the Model”.

Preparing Mediation Reports with Rhoda I. Dobler, Q.C. (2 hours)
This webinar addresses the various approaches to writing mediation reports/memoranda.  Many different styles have evolved, sometimes driven by the issues in dispute or even the professional background of the mediator.  We seldom receive opportunities to review the numerous styles and approaches to report preparation. In this webinar many different approaches to mediation report writing will be discussed and shared to increase understanding and to further develop report writing skills. We will examine the components of a mediation report and identify some tips to effectively communicate agreements reached, as well as pitfalls to avoid in written reports.
