Eileen Olexiuk - Keynote Speaker at the 2022 AGM

Eileen Olexiuk, a retired diplomat, served in Afghanistan from 2002 – 2005.  She was the first Canadian diplomat assigned solely to Afghanistan as Political Counsellor.  When the Canadian Embassy was established in August 2003, Ms. Olexiuk became the Deputy Head of Mission and Charge d’affaires.  Her main responsibility was to analyze developments and report to Ottawa on political affairs primarily: democratic development, good governance; security sector reform including de-militarization and disarmament, police, and justice; and Afghanistan’s adherence to international human rights norms.  She traveled extensively throughout the country and continues to maintain contact with activists in Afghanistan.  Previously, Ms. Olexiuk served in Canadian Embassies in Colombia with accreditation to Ecuador, and Greece with analytical responsibilities for the Balkans and Cypress.  Other assignments included responsibilities for Canadian assistance for Reconstruction in the Former Yugoslavia, for Economic and Political Transformation in Russia, and for development in Bangladesh, and the South- East Asia region.  After retirement, Ms. Olexiuk worked under contract to provide pre-deployment training to the Canadian Commanders and their headquarters staff destined for Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Eileen’s presentation will be at 12 noon eastern on Saturday, August 27 – don’t miss it! (If you are registered for the AGM, there is no need to register separately for Eileen’s talk).

Title of Raafia Shahid’s Presentation: Community Engagement among Racialized Immigrant Women
Brief Abstract:
Racialized immigrant women experience multiple discriminations due to their intersectional identities, including higher unemployment rates, health inequity and economic insecurity. As Canada works to accept 451,000 new immigrants per year by 2024, there is an imperative to ensure that all new members of our society are given the tools they need to succeed. Raafia’s research will explore the patterns of civic engagement among racialized immigrant women, with the hypothesis that civic engagement promotes political efficacy, contributing to the eradication of systemic barriers experienced by this group. There is simultaneously an imperative on Canadian institutions to ensure that there are avenues for social participation that account for the unique needs of this group to ensure that their voices are adequately represented in policy initiatives. The presentation will lay the background for the research to provide an overview of barriers experienced by racialized immigrant women when engaging with Canadian institutions and society.
