Activities Planned at Welk Homestead State Historic Site
BISMARCK, N.D. – The Welk Homestead State Historic Site will be hosting August events that include a blacksmith demonstration, brick making, crafting and kite flying. All events are free and open to the public.
Aug. 6 Blacksmithing, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Bob McCay, an amateur blacksmith, will share his knowledge of the blacksmithing craft. The Bismarck resident, a blacksmith for more than 10 years, learned the craft while working with others and enjoys teaching and demonstrating these skills to the public.
Aug. 6 Batsa Brick Making, 1-3 p.m. Site Supervisor Brian Grove will lead a hands-on demonstration of a traditional Black Sea German construction method using sun-dried bricks made of puddled clay.
Aug. 14 Creative Crafting: Making Music, 1-3 p.m. Participants will make musical instruments from recycled materials.
Aug. 28 Kite Flying With the Butterflies, 1-3 p.m. Participants will learn about the monarch butterfly migration and the role it plays in the United States from Elisha Mueller, a conservation biologist with the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, then send a kite soaring.
The Welk Homestead, located at 845 88th St. SE, Strasburg, is a state historic site managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
