Public Invited to Annual Ice Cream Social at Former Governors’ Mansion
BISMARCK, N.D. – The annual Ice Cream Social, a free family program of music, history, and refreshments, will be held Sunday, Aug. 14, from 12-4 p.m. at the Former Governors’ Mansion State Historic Site, 320 East Ave. B, Bismarck. Seating will be available, but the public is welcome to bring lawn chairs or blankets. This event is sponsored by the State Historical Society of North Dakota and the Society for the Preservation of the Former Governors’ Mansion.
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Bismarck, there is an expanded schedule of activities. The day will kick off at 10 a.m. with the free “Capital in Farm Country” walking tour beginning at Camp Hancock State Historic Site, 101 E. Main Street, and ending at the Former Governors’ Mansion. The tour covers a mile and lasts about an hour.
At noon, the United Tribes Technical College Color Guard will present colors. From noon to 2 p.m., attendees can enjoy a petting zoo, children’s games, and face painting by Theo Art School. Free flowers will be distributed while they last.
Following are activities from noon to 4 p.m.:
- Music provided by John Lardinois, known locally as Fiddlin Johnny, and his father John Jay Lardinois.
- Self-guided tours of the Former Governors’ Mansion with one of Bismarck’s 1872 residents, Linda Slaughter, greeting visitors.
- El Zagel Shrine Duster Club antique car display in front of the mansion on Avenue B and a 1917 fire engine on the mansion’s north side.
- The City of Bismarck's History & Mystery Virtual Scavenger Hunt with participants entered to win prizes including two youth ATVs.
- Free hot dogs and ice cream.
The Former Governors’ Mansion is a state historic site managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Summer hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday-Sunday, 12-4 p.m. For more information about the Former Governors’ Mansion, contact 701.328.9528.
