Join us Tuesday to look at sponsorship carousels and the facts of nonprofits taking advertising

We're going to use the Tuesday call to make sure you know about a tool for raising revenue from sponsorships. And we also want to discuss the sometimes-taboo idea of nonprofits running real advertising, not just the softer sponsorships like you hear on public radio or television.

Neil Chase from CalMatters and Steve Beatty from our team will go over the possibilities. In particular, we'll look at the Post Carousel block, which can be set to display only sponsors, and then used in a Campaigns prompt to target certain stories.

In particular, our friends at The Ithaca Voice have been successful at this. Head to their site and you'll see a main sponsor carousel a few scrolls down the homepage. And on each story, you'll see a carousel with sponsors who paid to sponsor that particular topic. So with each different story category, you get a different set of sponsors.

Neil will discuss how advertising is a critical and central function for the ongoing reporting his staff does, and what the implications of that decision are.

We hope you can make it here at 11 a.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday. The last item in this newsletter has a link to get this meeting on your calendar for next week and beyond.

The Tributary, a Newspack site, to be worker-directed nonprofit

Congratulations to our colleague, Andrew Pantazi, founder of The Tributary for being among those pioneering a new form of leadership for his newsroom.

As detailed by Nieman Lab, Andrew plans to let the staff of the Jacksonville, Fla., newsroom make group decision about hiring, budgeting and pay scale — just as soon as he hires a staff. From Nieman:

“I keep joking to my friends that I call this a workplace democracy but right now it’s really an autocracy because it’s just me,” he said. “Once we get to hire people, that’s when we get more of the the challenges to confront. It is a lot simpler to have a top-down hierarchy where somebody tells you the way things are and you have no say in the process. Once you add in democracy, things get difficult and messier, but that’s inherently a good thing. It makes everything more worthwhile.”

Andrew started The Tributary in December of 2020 and relaunched on Newspack in September 2021.

He's hiring for a reporter now, and we're eager to follow the site's growth and direction as more reporters/leaders come aboard.

A note about Tuesday's publisher's call and The Newspack Newsletter™

To better accommodate the schedules of those publishers who take vacations, we're going to move to just a few meetings until the first week in September.

We'll meet this coming Tuesday, July 12, and again on July 26. We'll announce a single meeting for August next week.

We're also moving to an every-other-week schedule for the newsletter, with the next edition coming out two weeks from today. This better matches our schedule for overall Newspack updates.

We're grateful for you joining us on the calls and reading this newsletter.

Get regularly scheduled meetings on your calendar with a couple clicks

We have a meeting every other Tuesday at 11 a.m. Eastern Time. This is for publishers and developers to get together, but it is by no means mandatory. Most of the meeting is turned over to guest speakers for professional development, or to one of our team members to highlight a major change to the Newspack platform. We use this meeting to update you on business and product developments, as well.

The next meeting is July 12.

And here’s a handy way to get them all on your calendar:
