2022 Aboriginal Engagement and
Reconciliation Forum

Expression of Interest to Showcase Innovative Projects
WALGA's Aboriginal Engagement and Reconciliation Forum will be held on Wednesday 5 October at Optus Stadium, Burswood.  Please save the date, information on our keynote speakers and the invitation to register will follow in August.

This annual forum, now in its sixth year, provides a fantastic opportunity to bring together Local Government and key partner organisations to discuss leading initiatives and build the capacity of the sector to support better outcomes for our First Nations People.

Our key themes for this year's forum are Truth - Justice - Healing.  There will be the sharing of deeper and honest stories, discussion of hurdles and potential solutions, and inspirational examples of driving positive change to support reconciliation and a better shared future for all.  Topics that support these themes include:
  • Aboriginal leadership and champions in Local Government and the community
  • Raising the voice of Aboriginal people in decision making processes
  • Recognising dark histories as a first step in addressing trauma and supporting reconciliation
  • Closing the Gap and achieving equality through social reinvestment, youth engagement and Aboriginal employment.
  • Cultural learning through Aboriginal language and practising traditional land management approaches
We are seeking Expressions of Interest from Local Governments who wish to showcase an innovative project that aligns with our three key themes and supporting topics.

The forum will include Aboriginal performances and celebrations of culture, including smoking ceremonies, singing and dancing.  If your Local Government is aware of local Aboriginal dance groups that would love to build their experience, please let us know.

Please submit your EOI by Friday, 22 July, including the speaker and short presentation overview, to Resilient Communities. To discuss potential ideas, please contact:

Alina Hobson, Policy Officer Community on 9213 2092
Melanie Davies, Biodiversity and Sustainability Project Officer on 9231 2065.

Thank you,
WALGA Resilient Communities and Environment Policy Teams
