Policy and Governance
- The Department of School Education and Literacy, under the Ministry of Education, has released the Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D) for 2018-19 and 2019-20, which assesses the performance of the school education system at the district level. The aim of the index is to help the districts prioritize areas for intervention in school education. As per the index, eight districts have improved their PGI score by more than 20% from 2018-19 and 14 districts bettered by 10%.
- The Karnataka government has renamed the Department of Primary and Secondary Education as the Department of School Education and Literacy with immediate effect. The name change is in line with guidelines of the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020, and with the school education system of other states.
- Indoor classroom games are set to be introduced in primary sections of government schools in Delhi. Chess, carrom, puzzles, scrabble and monopoly will be introduced as classroom games for students in classes 3 to 5, while children in younger grades will have soft toys and balls.
- The Chhattisgarh school education department has initiated a process for continuous monitoring of the impact of teaching and level of education in government schools. The School Education Secretary has also asked teachers to focus on the overall development of children’s abilities, including basic literacy and mathematical skills.
- The Telangana School Education Department has introduced a four-week bridge course for students of classes 2 to 10 from the beginning of this academic year to accelerate learning recovery among students. The State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has developed the bridge course which will also have an assessment every two weeks.
- The Madhya Pradesh Commission for Protection of Child Rights has asked the Madhya Pradesh government to bring all private schools in the state, including minority educational institutions, under the Right to Education (RTE) Act. The commission has written a letter to the Minister of School Education making a recommendation to this effect.
- The Bihar education department launched a fortnight-long state-level enrolment campaign called ‘Praveshotsava’ on July 2 which is aimed at ensuring 100% enrolment of boys and girls passing class 8 examination into class 9 of their respective schools. The State Education Minister appealed to all the stakeholders of education to ensure that no student is left unattended and stays away from school.
