Summits of the Americas: Women said they were present
The Summit of the Americas, a key event for the region which seeks to reach consensus with high authorities of the Member States on concrete actions to address present and future challenges, was held from June 6th to 10th. This year the IX Summit’s main themes were: democratic governance, health, climate change, transition to clean energy and digital transformation. The opening session featured remarks by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and the Mayor of the City of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti.
Within this framework, the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) participated in various activities. Taking advantage of these spaces, the Executive Secretary of the CIM, Alejandra Mora Mora, sought to generate alliances with women's and feminist organizations to strategically and jointly promote and position the advancement of the gender agenda in the region. She also participated in the launch of "#SomosLideresas" an initiative that highlights the work of women who have achieved relevant positions in their fields of action and encourages other women to continue working for gender equality and women's rights.

Women leaders in the region and international institutions call for action to boost women's leadership and parity democracy
On June 9th, the High-Level Panel "Women's Leadership: Promoting Gender Equality and Democracy in the Americas" was organized by the Government of Canada together with the Summits Secretariat, the CIM and the Inter-American Task Force on Women's Leadership, in the framework of the IX Summit of the Americas. The objective of the dialogue was to share and highlight experiences and lessons learned from public initiatives led by governments to promote and ensure women's participation in decision-making.
The dialogue was attended by Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly; Panama’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Érika Mouynes; and the Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Samantha Power.
Alejandra Mora Mora, Executive Secretary of the CIM, Dr. Carissa Etienne, Director of the Pan American Health Organization, and moderator Gwen K. Young of the Women Business Collaborative participated in the event's awards process.

CIM and the Office of the Attorney General of Colombia make progress in gender mainstreaming
On June 15th, the CIM’s technical team received a visit from the Attorney General of Colombia, Margarita Cabello. During the meeting, emphasis was placed on the need to strengthen gender competencies within the Attorney General's Office; in this regard, progress was made on a road map to mainstream the gender perspective in the actions of this institution and to take into account the differentiated needs of women.

Road to the Regional Conference on Women
The Extraordinary Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference was held on June 22nd and 23rd, where opinions and positions were exchanged on the preparations for the XV Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean. The President of the CIM, María Inés Castillo, called for strengthening coordination among multilateral organizations in order to advance the regional gender agenda jointly, on the understanding that equality is a problem for society as a whole.
Along the same lines, the Executive Secretary of the CIM, Alejandra Mora Mora, highlighted care work as a unifying axis of the feminist agenda and emphasized the urgency of recognizing the right of all people to be cared for and the need to move towards new economic pacts that allow women to participate fully in the public sphere.

Second virtual meeting for strengthening and coordinating the relationship between the Caribbean and MESECVI
On June 27th, the Technical Secretariat of the Follow-up Mechanism of the Belém do Pará Convention (MESECVI) and the States Parties of the Caribbean met to share experiences, challenges and opportunities to advance in the implementation of the Belém do Pará Convention.
The virtual session was an opportunity to hear and highlight the Caribbean's priorities on the road to effective implementation of the Convention. Sexual violence, women's economic rights and femicide/feminicide were highlighted among the main concerns.
This second meeting is part of MESECVI's special strategy to strengthen the connection with the Caribbean States Parties and support the work of the Caribbean Competent National Authorities and Experts.

Bi-regional Dialogue "New social contracts and alliances for more resilient societies in Latin America and the Caribbean"
Organized by the European Union's EUROsociAL+ program, the high-level panel aimed to facilitate a debate on the importance of building new social contracts and public policies to generate more inclusive and cohesive societies. The focus of the dialogue was on bilateralism in terms of reciprocity between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean.
The event was attended by the Executive Secretary of the CIM, Alejandra Mora Mora, who shared her panel with Ragnheiður Elín Árnadóttir, Director of the OECD Development Centre and Giorgio Boccardo Boson, Undersecretary of Labor of Chile.
During her intervention, the Secretary presented some of the challenges facing the region in terms of gender in the current context: political participation and violence against women, she also emphasized care as the main obstacle to women's economic autonomy. In addition, she highlighted multilateralism as a fundamental tool for advancing towards inclusive societies and she underscored the support and work carried out between the CIM and EUROsociAL.
