Mary Lou Thompson Retreat

The title of the presentation of this year’s retreat is: “Reconciliation and Creating Community” How have these past few Covid years yielded moments of reconciliation? What or whom are we reconciled with? How have recent current events stirred you to consider the necessity of reconciliation? What would it take to change our attitudes regarding our fellow humans in these days of war in Eastern Europe and children all over the world being randomly assaulted? How can we come into community with a sense of belonging and trust? Can we create such a community in our churches, homes, communities?
Join the Episcopal church women and Rev. Mary Lou McKinney, our retreat leader this year, for a time of reflection, conversation, and prayer to address some of these topics so pertinent to our lives right now. This year’s retreat is extended to three days for added rest and rejuvenation. You can arrive on August 19 any time after 2:00 PM. The retreat program begins at 4:00 PM with refreshments and social time. It ends on August 21 at 1:00 PM.
The cost for this two day retreat, which includes overnight accommodations for two nights and 6 meals is:
- $195.00 per night for a private room ($390.00 for the weekend)
- $155.00 per person for a shared room ($310.00 for the weekend)
- $75.00 per day for Commuter. Meals provided. ($150.00 for the weekend if you attend all days.)
Partial scholarships are available. Please register by August 5, 2022.

Update from SLO Canterbury
SLO Canterbury Foundation (SLO CF) is the 501c3 non-profit that organizes campus ministry at Cal Poly. We have elected new officers for the new "academic" year starting July 1, 2022. Rachel Mann will serve as President (outgoing was Liz Frost) and Cal Poly student Caroline Roberts as Secretary (outgoing was Paul Shires). Leann Brooks continues to do our book-keeping.
Together with St. Benedict's of Los Osos, we applied for and received a Bishop's Appeal Community Trailblazer grant to hire recent seminary graduate Jen Crompton (they/them) to serve as Chaplain. The Trailblazer grant covers 50% of a full time position for 2 years, including benefits. St Benedict's will cover 25%, and SLO CF will cover another 25%. Jen's time will be split 50% to St Ben's, and 50% to campus ministry.
There is consensus among the board that campus ministry is a mission that needs a full-time person with consistent funding from the Diocese and larger church. The dominant evangelical Christian culture at Cal Poly is alienating and oppressive to folks with historically "othered" identities and those who care about them. We see a deep need to create safe and welcoming spaces and activities where they can grow in understanding their own minds and spirits as friends.

Volunteers operate the St. Barnabas Thrift Shop

Book sales have moved from the patio to the parish hall. Thank you to those who have purchased books. Summer is an especially active season for donations. To avoid disappointment, if you have more than a couple of grocery bags of things please call first to make sure we have room to accept them. The phone number is 805-270-4023.
Help wanted: someone to transport books from the shop to the parish hall and arrange/display. Remove books from the parish hall and transport hardbacks to the Grover Beach library and paperbacks to Nan’s Preowned Books. This should require a few hours two or three times a month.
Due to a small bathroom sink, some glass or ceramic items need to be rinsed so the shop is seeking someone willing to pick up items, rinse and return to the shop. One trip a week would help the process.

Our hearts are with all those living through the crisis in Ukraine. Episcopal Relief & Development is mobilizing with our partners to provide humanitarian assistance to families fleeing the violence — and we will continue to coordinate with these networks to meet the needs of families that have been displaced. Please support these efforts, and please pray for all those who are affected.

Tuesday Morning Prayer at 9:30 am and Biblical Roundtable
If you have a Book of Common Prayer at home that will be useful to have on hand. The Biblical Roundtable is studying the Gospel of Mark and anyone is welcome to join then. Friday afternoon Centering Prayer at 4pm
On Friday afternoons at 4pm we will hold a Centering Prayer Service. After first gathering for a few minutes we practice our 20 minutes of silent Centering Prayer. Following the practice we will be reading and discussing a passage from The Cloud of Unknowing, an anonymous fourteenth century spiritual director. We'll be using Where Only Love Can Go an edited collection of the writings.
